I've noticed if I roll the cursor over the ad at the top of the page, it causes the pop up to appear beneath. Of course, to avoid this, I'm frozen on the page until it goes away.

You don't have to wait for it to go away. Click anywhere on a blank place on the page and it goes away. Still it is extremely annoying, and I wonder if it could have found a software portal that could be used by a more damaging virus.

Its like this ad has burrowed itself into the site somehow, as I've had to delet it about 5 or 6 times so far. Grrrrrrr.........

After my pop-up blocker blocked the first ad a second one popped under with a large FART button. It said press it, you know you want to. No idea what it's for. Of course I didn't press it and honestly, believe it or not, didn't really want to.
Thanks though for the AVP on Fox ad. It's actually the first ad I've ever clicked on the right hand side.

Thanks for the continue feedback!!
I'm continuing to pursue this issue. I am going to try something over the next 6 hours to try to isolate the problem. Please let me know if it continues to pop up (and clear your cache and "refresh" the page to make sure it isn't that).
Also, I did find the Navy ads. It's an interesting idea - donating the proceeds from that ad to the SLDF. We'll consider it.

You may not have seen the end of it. We will be testing a few things over the coming days, so please bear with us if it pops up again. But, the pop-under won't be permanent - we'll see to that. Thanks for your patience!

So now I'm getting an annoying Circuit City ad popping up like the AMex ad a while back. It came up at least 4 times yesterday, and at least that many times today.
Yuckie!

I have had a couple of popups lately as well, suddenly and out of the blue, when I should not be receiving any because of my blocker..
Maddog
Jul 6 2006, 12:06 PM
Those aren't pop ups. They are roll-overs. If you roll over them with your mouse (or any where close) they will expand the ad or make a noise or sometimes both.
They are no doubt very annoying but your pop-up blocker can't do anything about it.
shep71
Jul 6 2006, 12:55 PM
That's what I thought they were too, but there was no circuit city ad that I rolled over, and several times, after I initially close it, it "pops" right back up, even though I haven't moved the mouse. It is very similar to what used to happen with those other ads.
They're very peculiar. But I'll be the first to admit, I'm no computer smarty!

I've been getting that ad on lots of other sites, but I've NEVER gotten it on Outsports. Same with the American Express ad of a couple months ago. Still, I'll look into it.

I just got an Overstock.com one on the top of my NFL Thread.
But FYI, those roll-over ads are much more expensive to buy through these general ad networks and they reset at midnight (probably PST) which means you are more likely to run into them in the morning than in the evening when their alloted amount has run out.

What is that annoying little voice that activates when you're leaving outsports? It says "oh my god" or trickles like a water fountain? It's amusing at first and then just annoying....

Jul 7 2006, 07:31 PM
It's actually another roll over banner ad for talking emoticons. I've hit it before and it's scared the bejeezus outta me. The only one's I've seen are embedded at the bottom of the page.

It doesn't even pop up. It just buzzes annoyingly from it's little off-center embedded home at the bottom of the page.

Jul 19 2006, 07:48 AM
Maybe in between the Chicago and Montreal Cyd could call the ad network and ask them to pull the Amex, Emoticons and Mosquito ads from rotation.
I have a feeling the reason we're seeing so many here is that other sites have asked them to be removed and the network is obligated to provide x number of pageviews of each ad per day throughout the network of sites. Therefore we get many more than our share.

I'm sure Jim and Cyd will look into the annoying ads when they get a chance after the games.
The last thing they want to do is scare off the 100's of potential new members now that the Outports name is associated with Gay Games Gold.
For the Mosquito and Emoticon ads I turn my volume off and with the American Express/Circuit City embedded/roll-over pop-ups, I just write my reponses first in Word then cut and paste the reply before the pop-up knocks me out or makes me double post.

One should not have to turn their volume off or get some new software to stop this irritating buzz..the webmaster should take control and resolve it...thats like saying the best way to avoid George Bush or Republicans is to turn down the volume on your television.

LOL! I can see the rockslide of this inexorable logic: (AMEX = corporation) + (GOPers = corporations) + (Bush = GOPer) .'. it's Bush's fault!

And the mosquito represents the leeching of our natural resources and our bank accounts during this administration.

I hope Jim and Cyd will send out an email when the ads are gone.

I've never gotten this Amex ad you've all talked about. Maybe I'm just lucky or else it's because I use the Firefox browser. Occasionally, despite its popup blocker, I do get a popup ad on some sites (including this one), but it's not often and they're always easily gotten rid of.
As for the buzzing, if you just hit the "refresh" or "reload" button on your browser the banner ad changes.

At the risk of being out of the mainstream:
Maybe we should all send outsports $10? This website is free, after all, and as a guy who has had a website, I know the cost. The ISP fee may be cheap, but the day-to-day upkeep is a nightmare.

I just surprised Amex advertises this way. So aggressively.
I think the only people who would apply for a credit card on a whim from an Internet banner ad are people who wouldn't be accepted in the first place. eek!

When I got the ad to pop-up again I quickly right mouse clicked on it and then left mouse clicked. This is what I got as a screen capture. It doesn't stay on the screen very long before it goes away. Here is the image, if it's too large I understand if you need to delete it. Does this information help at all? Did we already know this about the pop-up?
