Considering the fact that we have been suffering through single digit temps (and wind chills below zero) for the better part of January, you made my day with this thread, ump....in fact, I just picked up the latest issue of Baseball America yesterday (with new San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn on the cover along with his son Anthony, who is not only a junior outfielder for the Aztecs but is also their best player) and I have been reading about a number of impressive young players who are expected to make an immediate impact on the both the collegiate and major league level in 2003....the arrival of Spring Training and warm temps cannot come soon enough this year. smile.gif

wooohoooo, baseball is just around the corner!

LET'S GO METS! wink

I was going to suggest that maybe a link to the schedule could be posted, instead of the entire list of games. But then I saw this, which I wouldn't have noticed otherwise:

It's nice that there's going to be a charity game, but shouldn't they tell people where the heck the game is being played??? Why are they keeping it a Surprise?!?!?

The link has changed more than once; hence my decision to post the schedule here in its entirety.
Ump25
Well, after an offseason that wasn't nearly as quiet as I would have liked--I spent most of December in Baltimore and New York on business, unfortunately--it's time to go back to work. How I wish I could have at least that one month of December back!

Back to the ole grindstone beginning Friday for me. To those who are involved in any way with amateur ball--NCAA, high school, Little League, whatever--my best wishes for a great season, free from injuries and full of good memories. At least YOUR seasons are shorter than mine!
Marc
Ump,

What does (ss) mean beside the names of many of the above teams? Baseball is famous (or maybe infamous) for its many abbreviations, but I don't think (ss) has anything to do with 'short stop' in this context. Just taking a wild guess (likely wrong), does it mean 'second string'?

I notice some games are being played in Peoria?? As in Illinois? Seems unlikely, especially in late Feb and early March, unless it's warmer there than I thought, or they have a domed stadium. I'm going to assume there must be another Peoria, in Arizona.

Good to see some international exposure again too, with games in Japan (go, Mariners!) and Mexico, although I think Dominican Republic ought to be hosting a game as well, considering the number of players from that country. Of course, we'll see even more international exposure in the regular season too, with the 'Montreal' Expos playing many of their games in Puerto Rico.

SS stands for split squad--it happens a lot in spring training when the rosters are at 40 and a fair number of non-roster invitees are around as well. Half of the team is at one game, the rest is at another. It's a way for players to get work in, or make an impression if they're trying to win a major league job.

For example, here's the Phillies' schedule on Friday:
NY Yankees vs. Philadelphia (ss) @ Clearwater
Philadelphia (ss) vs. Atlanta @ Disney
Ump25
Marc,

Joe is correct in his explanation re. what "SS" means.

Peoria refers to Arizona. Winter doesn't end in Peoria, Illinois until June, I think. wink
Marc
Wow, prompt responses! Thanks for the help, guys.

BTW Ump, I think our winters are even LONGER than Peoria's...that's part of the reason we lost our Triple A team (Calgary Cannons) to Albuquerque last year  The baseball season starts too early for our fickle weather at these latitudes, resulting in many postponed games.

Hey Marc, isn't that the Albuquerque Isotopes? I thought it was the Capital City Isotopes team that moved there? Wonder if they still have a Dancing Homer, or if they went back to the Goofball mascot? And, alas, no more Bleeding Gums Murphy's (R.I.P.) soulful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner.

Meanwhile, back at spring training:

Pedro tries to play while stoned

The HoJo Mets' John Franco tries to work off the fried clams

Broadway's finest work on their choreography

Mike Piazza tries to convince a new teammate that he's not gay
Marc
Hi Seph,

Indeed it is the Isotopes who have replaced the Cannons. It has to be one of the oddest and dumbest names I've ever heard of for any sports team. Until I checked a dictionary, I had only a vague idea of what an 'isotope' is (physics and chemistry were never my best subjects). The Isotopes' home page doesn't explain how the team was named; but my guess is that it's some sort of obscure reference to New Mexico's history in the development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, back before our time. Still, I think they could have come up with something more interesting and easier to relate to baseball (you gotta admit, 'Cannons' was better, and catchier). Even 'Albuquerque Aliens' (as in Roswell, N.M.) would have had more appeal than 'Isotopes'!

BTW, nice photos you posted. I especially liked the picture and the caption you chose for the last one. At least Piazza handled the rumours with more class than Sandy Koufax...

It's because of an episode of the Simpsons, as Seph alluded to--their team is the Springfield Isotopes (because of the power plant) and the team's owner secretly planned to move the team to Albuquerque until his scheme was exposed by Homer. So this real-life team in Albuquerue decided to take the name. I'm surprised it's not on their website. Homer must be their webmaster...."'To start press any key.' Where's the 'any' key?" biggrin.gif

For those who might not get this: Surprise is the actual name of the stadium at which the charity game today was played. smile.gif

Mariners beat the Padres 6-5! I know this is only a spring training game, but it's still nice to get a win. Also, I'm glad to see that it's a charity game. smile.gif smile.gif Mariners smile.gif smile.gif

I knew there had to be a more 'logical' explanation than the one I offered! This one's more humourous too, I might add. In the umpteen years 'The Simpsons' has been on the tube, I don't think I've ever watched a single episode, so Seph's reference went right over my head. I thought maybe he was making some sort of pun on Homer the character, and 'homers' scored in baseball. Anyway, thanks for enlightening me smile.gif

PS: Just noticed there is a Simpsons thread in the non-sports forum, with 45 posts! I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only Outsporter who doesn't watch the show; maybe I've been missing something all these years.

My partner and I and some friends from work are heading out to Milwaukee the end of this month to see our Twins play the Brewers in their final preseason games. Anybody else from these boards going to be there? Is there anything else that we should do/see in Milwaukee? These few months between football and baseball have just seemed to drag on and on this year. I can hardly wait, just 21 more days until the Twins' season officially starts. biggrin.gif
BTW, I've also got 2 tickets to the Tiger's home opener on 3/31 (against the Twins) and just found out I won't be able to go. If anyone is interested...
