Patricia Nell Warren has a terrific
new article on the death of a German boxing legend and the subject of gays in sports.

I printed it and read it on the bus this morning. Very interesting article.

Terrific article.
"Oscar de la Hoya publicly thanks his gay fans"
...while very visibly denying rumors about his own sexuality, something I'm surprised Ms. Warren didn't mention. Have you seen the guys on the promos for his new FOX boxing/reality show? Damn.

Yeah, nice article, especially like her personal relections on the boxer; but think some of the content is too long. Maybe it's just my fatique today. The sections about the style of dressing in boxing causes me a little pause, because if I understood the article correctly, one could find such motifs and analogies in any sporting events--particularly with gay men and their fetish for clothes. I mean, I fetishize all sorts of uniforms from all sorts of sports--satin boxing shorts are not the only sexy uniforms in sports.
I actually enjoy watching boxing and used to often watch Friday Night fights. And I kick myself for not going to the blue Horizon when I lived in Philadelphia, but could find none of my friends who wanted to go. Or rather, had no friends who would venuture to that neck of Broad Street.

Well, it is still open, although from what I've read they don't exactly have high-quality matches nowadays...

Nice article, especially the reminiscence by Greg Varney of starting the gay boxing club in San Francisco, However, I did find it contradictory for Thomas Hauser to say that "if a champion fighter were to come out today, the majority of fight fans wouldn't care" when paired with the vitriolic reactions of fans to Lennox Lewis, who is seen as "different."
