Full Version: Homophobic UF Softball Coach fired

This just in...Karen Johns has been shown the door. She was the Bible-thumping coach who discriminated against Andrea Zimbardi, the gay All-SEC catcher, as Jim reported here on Outsports.

AD Foley remarked that the program "wasn't achieving the success that we envisioned." Well, duh. Kick off players for reasons unrelated to their skills and look what happens. No champions = no championships.

Buh bye.

Good riddance. Glad to see she's gone.

It was a travesty that Florida somehow got a #1 seed in the NCAA Softball Tournament last weekend. The Gators lost 11 of their final 16 games, were unranked and went 0-2 in the SEC Tournament yet inexplicibly were awarded a #1 seed. Of course they went 0-2 in the NCAA regionals, including an embarrassing loss to Bethune-Cookman.

The NCAA Softball Tournament is a joke and the NCAA selection committees in women's sports are awful. In one softball regional last week, unranked Florida was joined by unranked Bethune-Cookman, unranked South Florida and unranked Central Florida. And one of the regionals out west matched up 2nd-ranked Cal with 15th-ranked Fresno State, 23rd-ranked Long Beach State and 25th-ranked BYU. So much for keeping things fair.

Too bad it happened too late to help Andrea Zimbardi.....

I just looked at the picture of the homophobic coach and the it hit me! I know her!!! In college she was Karen Sanchelli where she played her college ball at USC. That team had plenty of lesbians on it as do many college teams, and I had no idea that she was such right winger. At that time she sure wasn't. I don't recall hearing of her in any relationships with women, but then again, I never did try to look into anyone's personal business. I am torn now; do I write her a letter or not? I am tempted to to tell her how shamed I am of the Florida incident that it has roots at USC, and that we went to school together. Has she already learned a lesson? Was being fired enough of an embarrasment for her to have payed the price? Maybe she could give me her side of the story and see if it is different from that of the Ms. Zimbardi(sp). Either way I am truly ashamed that we did go to the same school and worked together with the womens' softball program.

I think you should write her if you knew her that well that she would remember you. It would have more of an impact coming from you than from a complete stranger. From reading the article about her hiring, I think that what happened in Florida could very well happen again and this time the school will back her up.
