Patricia Nell Warren has another
terrific installment on gays in sports history. It's a great interview with David Kopay, who is as feisty and blunt as ever.

He also looked great in the pic they had of him from his pro days in the Esera Tuaolo HBO sports special the other night.
I really love his autobiography. I've read a number of gay books and bios, and his is, to me, by far, the best. It's mind-boggling that he came out when he did. It's such an awesome story that I'm surprised there haven't been a slew of documentaries and films based on it. He's such an icon, and it's good to hear he's still active.

I am from a small town in the South. I knew from the age of 5 or 6 that I was attracted to men. Growing up, I developed a self hatred because I knew I was different, but there was no one I could talk to about it. I was also angry with God for being the way I was. One day I was watching the Donohue Show when I saw Dave Kopay on stage talking about being gay. It gave me hope that I was not alone, and that I could be an athlete and gay (it didn't hurt that Dave was so good looking.) Dave, thank you for giving a young guy hope. I'm not sure that I would have made it without you as an inspiration.

Well said, Reed. Here's to Dave Kopay, and to you as well.
