Hi - I am researching the status of transgendered folks in professional sport and am looking for info. Does anyone know the history around transgendered people in professional sport, or just how professional a competitive transgendered athlete is allowed to be under the various sporting governances policies? I know that the IOC tests chromosomes, thus an athlete cannot be transgendered. However, the UCI (International Cycling Union) allows transgendered folks to compete in World Cup events. Can anyone steer me towards some sources?? Thanks!!

I don't know of any specific published sources on this issue, but i do know that a few years ago the national volleyball team in Thailand was made up of mostly transgendered athletes (MTF). The way the championships are set up in Thailand, club teams compete against each other with the entire championship team being declared the national team. The transgendered athletes were shunned from most clubs and decided to form their own club which subsequently won the national championship. At the time it happened I heard many media accounts of it here in the US, so you probably could find some articles. The events were also made into a somewhat fictionalized feature film called 'Iron Ladies' which was recently released here in the US. It is in Thai, but has English subtitles and is definitely entertaining if nothing else. I hope this helps.
