Full Version: Terrell Owens on gays in the NFL
Outsports Discussion Board > Outsports > Gays in Sports
Joe in Philly
He's done a Playboy interview, says the Phila. Inquirer, and they asked him about a possible NFL player coming out...but also....

QUOTE
The most controversial answer from the Eagles' newest receiver was about Jeff Garcia, his former teammate and quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers. Owens was critical of Garcia's ability before and after he left the 49ers, but Playboy's question was not about the quarterback's on-field performance.

The question: Jeff Garcia \"has denied media rumors he's gay. What do you think?\"

Owens' response: \"Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat.\"

Exactly what he meant by \"my boy\" is not clear. Owens is single and does not have any children, according to the Eagles' media guide.

Playboy followed up by asking what would happen if an NFL player came out of the closet and admitted he was gay.

\"I probably wouldn't say anything right off the bat,\" Owens said. \"I'd just see what everyone else has to say. I'd probably keep my distance and, hopefully, he would keep his. If it was a guy who was helping us win ball games, hey, I'd have no problem with it. He can do what he wants to do outside of my everyday life.\"

I read the article also -- I thought the implication about TO being single with no children was classic. Of course, we know that all unmarried guys are gay and all guys with kids are straight. Helps to simplify things, right? tongue.gif

What more does Jeff Garcia have to do besides say, "I'm not gay."?

TO is an ass****, and he's seen far more up close than Jeffy in a tree-lined park at night. Ass. Hole.

T.O. elaborated slightly when asked today about his Garcia comments...

QUOTE
\"It was just a loose conversation,\" Owens said. \"He asked me about it. I just told him, my boy always told me if it looks like a rat, smells like a rat, obviously, by golly, it must be a rat.\"

While Owens' was likely referring to a friend, the identity of Owens' boy is unknown. According to the Eagles' media guide, Owens is single and has no children.

But Owens emphasized he never actually stated that Garcia was a homosexual.

\"I didn't say that he was gay,\" Owens said. \"The conversation and the interview were loose. To my knowledge, I'm not sure if Jeff is gay or not. I've seen him out — he had a girlfriend when we were in San Fran. There's been a recent report that he has a girlfriend now. That was the extent of it. Everybody's going to make a big deal out of it. It wasn't like I came out and said 'Jeff was gay.' People asked me similar questions about Steve Young. Everybody is going to have their rumors.\"

Andy Reid said he hadn't seen Owens' comments.

\"I don't read Playboy,\" Reid quipped.

When I heard this on the radio this morning, I thought it only a matter of time that someone from a major sport will be really outed by a teammate or ex ex-teammate. It only takes someone like T.O. who isn't afraid to say whatever comes to mind to start the ball rolling. T.O maybe the first to allegedly out a player but it just lowers the bar for others to try the same thing.

I eagerly await Jeff's response.

JEFF GARCIA is gay? Playboy should have called me like a few years ago after I heard him speak on TV.

This guy is a flaming little queen.

In other news:

The sun came up today, and andy reid had a triple cheeseburger for lunch.. and another for breakfast.

Really which is more shocking?

I saw Garcia talking about asserting his leadership with the Browns this year on "Old school SportCenter" rolleyes.gif this morning followed by the TO commentary. PF is right, every time JG spoke a purse fell out... and then the pearls.... and then a pair of purple patent leather f*** me pumps... and finally a poodle.

But still, I would not throw Garcia out of bed.... or Terrell Owens either biggrin.gif

How can Jeff Garcia be gay when he's dating the 2004 Playboy Playmate of the year, Carmella DeCesare? wink

QUOTE
Interestingly, Garcia's girlfriend, Carmella Decesare, was a high-profile bystander at Browns practice yesterday. And she just happens to be the 2004 Playboy Playmate of the Year.
I like this quote:

QUOTE
Garcia has said he is not gay. Earlier this year, he said, \"I've heard the rumor myself that I'm gay. That is not the case. I've had girlfriends in the past and I do want to be married someday.\"
Poor Jeff! We mock you, but only because we love you. biggrin.gif

Didn't someone with very close connections to Outsports claim to have some inside info that, in fact, TO himself is gay?
sportinlife
The statement "Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat." suggests TO thinks Garcia is gay.

No longer being with the 49ers I suppose TO doesn't have to follow the unspoken rule that you don't "rat" on a fellow teammate or spread rumors about things that you do not know to be true.

This is an interesting situation where two players who might be closeted use different rules.

At the risk of sounding gossipy, when a pro athlete rumored to be gay out of the blue starts dating a Playboy Playmate, that's the next best thing to coming out in my book. Garcia might as well throw a parade or something. But I ain't one to gossip, so you didn't hear that from me.

Wait a minute... does that mean Mike Piazza is gay? smile.gif

More to the point, it suggests that Owens thinks being gay is a bad thing, or at least wants the public to think he does. "Rat" is rarely used as a compliment.

At the same time, the non-answer answer reeks of plausible deniability (Owens can say he "never said that" even though the context implies it).

Either way, Owens comes across as a homophobic prick.

I think he could be using the term "rat" referring to Garcia as a liar (as in the closet). Anxiously awaiting Garcia's response. T.O. should be careful, those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

How big of a story is this in Philly? ESPN News is devoting 15 minutes to it in their 4-5 p.m. Pacific hour.

Jeff Garcia's response:

QUOTE
\"It is really a waste of my time to sit here and to have to answer to such ridiculous, untrue comments that are made out there in the world today,\" Garcia said.

He noted that it has been reported that he has a girlfriend and has had girlfriends in the past.

\"So many people know my situation here. It has never been a secret,\" Garcia said.

And, "4Quarters" on ESPNNews devoted a segment to it, including an interview with Dave Kopay about homesexuality in the NFL & one of the local sports-talk stations spent about 30 minutes on the Owens' Playboy comments, though it pretty much degenerated into a discussion on which LA athletes are "too pretty to be real men."

The item about it in the Phila. Daily News included pretty much all the information I posted above and that's it, and yesterday the reports on the local Fox station and on Comcast Sportsnet were similarly brief. The article in the Phila. Inquirer added this:

QUOTE
Owens' comments angered the lesbian and gay community. \"Terrell Owens needs to make a public apology,\" said Rita Addessa, executive director of the Lesbian and Gay Task Force of Philadelphia.

\"[Owner] Jeffrey Lurie needs to demonstrate his own leadership and make it clear that he will not tolerate any public bias or bigotry on the part of his players,\" Addessa said. \"He needs to address this matter.\" Owens' comments \"degrade and dehumanize\" lesbian and gay people, she said, and such comments \"set up people to be harmed.\"
I don't know where the writer gets the idea that the whole community was offended just because Rita Addessa spouted off. I don't think her organization has much influence in anything. The last few years they've sent me a membership renewal notice and had me classified for the previous year as having paid $1.00 (which I think they ask if you have financial hardship) even though I have sent them no money in many years, and I don't even know how they got my current address. I think they're doing that to pad their membership stats. Angelo Cataldi on the WIP (sportsradio) morning show read her comment above and ranted about her being an idiot. Other than that I'm not sure if it's being discussed on their station at all.

How the hell is this offensive to anyone?

Ya'all will see offfensive when i'm shouting at randy moss and what his mom does on a saturday night.
Jim at Outsports
My take on everything.
Aubie In Bham
what does a girlfriend mean? Hell, I've seen more married men come out of the closet recently than you can shake a stick at.
CPT_Doom
Well, I guess all those people who hoped the change of scenery would change TO's penchant for being an a--hole are sorely disappointed now.

Jim, I think you have the best take on the whole thing - it was bad enough for Owens to spout off like that, but Garcia did not do anyone any favors with his response. Whoever the gay players are in the NFL, and there simply have to be some, they got a pretty clear message from both sides that being gay is still far from okay in the league.

I think we'll really know there has been a change in the homophobic atmosphere of pro sports when someone in Garcia's position does not take the suggestion he is gay as an accusation. How much classier would it have been for Garcia to take the Richard Gere "I don't care what people think about me, think I'm gay, think I'm straight, it doesn't matter" approach to the whole thing, and not squire the hot blonde (I'm assuming any playmate is blonde) around to prove how "manly" he is.

I find it quite hilarious that the media, gay and otherwise, is giving a ton of attention to this issue, and hardly any at all to the following memory I will always hold dear about Mr. Garcia:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object.cgi?objec...&type=universal

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object.cgi?paper..._garcia_mug.jpg

Jeff, gay or not, I'll always remember you in your suave mugshot, needing a severe makeover, relishing the opportunity to use all the standard catchphrases attached to such incidents like "I want to put this behind me", "I have paid my debt to society" and crap like that.

Fact is, we wouldn't be talking about Garcia's possible gayness had he pitched that SUV and all its occupants (3 others), or hit someone.
