Full Version: Dave Kopay Story
Outsports Discussion Board > Outsports > Gays in Sports
Jim at Outsports
Hi, wanted to alert you to a story I wrote on ex-NFLer Dave Kopay.

I spent a couple of hours with him in LA and he was a delight. He always welcomes e-mails and his address is at the bottom of the story. He's a real pioneer and it would be cool if people let him know what he has meant. Thanks.

Dave Kopay was crucial for me. When I read about him in 1975, it meant a lot--a guy who was gay who WASN'T Paul Lynde or Liberace, great as Paul Lynde was. How sad to read about him and Jerry Smith. He really is a trailblazer and for him to come out like he did in 1975 was like a bomb going off. The hysteria of the hetero writers/fans is amusing to read now, and more than a bit scary. Poor dears, they had their whole world view crushed in to a billion bits. In some ways, apropos to DK's comment that "Yes, we've made progess", it seems like it happened a 1,000 years ago.

Don't particulary agree with his NFL take though! I think the Pats are 8-8 material etc.

Jim, who is the photo of that DK is pointing to in that one picture? Is it Jerry Smith?

I wrote asking if he'd do an "Ump-style" Q & A on the discussion board about football. Don't know if this has been put to him before, but I for one would like to have his comments, opinions, whatever as a former insider.

We did mention to him having a section of the discussion board to answer questions. He's just getting situated with his computer and Internet, so this isn't a great time. Hopefully, in the near future, we could have that feature.

I have been trying to see a picture of these gay athletes/or coach - Dave Slattery Wash Redskins - ( manager early 70s) - Jerry Smith (player Wash. Rdskns - 65-77) Roy Simmons (off. player Wash Redskins 79-83) all mentioned in stories of gay athletes. Pictures would be great to see these pre internet guys . I have looked but can't find any pics . ANY HELP??

Haven't seen any pics but these words speak louder than a thousand pics:

One writer says why he thinks Jerry Smith should be in the Hall of Fame

Interesting article. The writer seems to make a good case. I did a double take, though, when I saw the name of the writer.

Ever hear of GOOGLE??

I've got your Jerry Smith picture, right here:

You're going to have to work for it a little, though. You're going to have to block out the URL then paste it ... it doesn't work as a pure link.

CitT, how'd you do that? Google came up with lots of interesting Jerry Smiths, but even adding Redskins or football to the search query didn't turn up the photo you found. I guess you gotta have a gimmick. Good one!

"jerry smith redskins"

It was about fourth or fifth entry.

It's like Emerson or Thoreau kinda-sorta said: the un-googled life is not worth living.

That Tripod doesn't (like the Web) always work.

But when it does, I enjoy the pictures.

Hi, I set up this thread to discuss Kopay and it is getting close to veering off into the direction of what search engine to use for pictures. Let's try and stay on topic, if anyone has something to say. Thanks!

Sorry - I think I threw us off track but isn't it interesting how all the above guys & Kopay have a connection to the Washington Redskins ! I hope we are back on track now.

The picture he is holding is of himself. This guy deserves a lot of credit and respect. He played the game with the big boys. I was a little taken aback by the "Old Queen" tag though. Even in jest, I wouldn't place that aspersion on him.
