I just posted
a piece on how Jim Rome and Dan Patrick handle gay issues. I am curious as to what others think when they listen to these guys or to the other myriad sports talk show hosts.

I'm not a fan of Jim Rome, but I will admit that he is anti-homophobic and anti-racist and I respect him for that.
The local Toronto sports stations
The Team and
The Fan are both cool and politically correct.
I wake up to Paul Romanuk (formerly TV sports announcer on TSN) & Mike Richards (funny guy) on my alarm clock radio. They're funny, knowledgeable and hetero--but in a good way.

I like Jim Rome's stance against homophobes- that being said he is a HOTTIE!

I've never listened to him on the radio, but I do get to see him on Fox Sports Net. I've always thought him to be fair. He treated the Brendon Lemmon/Player X thing well.
And, concurring with Copmn, Rome IS a hottie.

Regarding the sub-story on the Dan Patrick Show, we often have it on at work and I am extremely conflicted about Patrick. He is clearly an intelligent, articulate broadcaster who can bring out insightful comments from his guests, but seems to spend much of the broadcast pandering to the lowest common denominator in the listening audience. This leads to "frat house humor" between Patrick, (co-host) Rob Dibble, and their stable of regular commentators and e-mailers. As an example, Dibble has recently become friends with Kyle Turley and has talked about how much he likes Turley, his style of play, and his renegade look. This has led Patrick to "joke" about Dibble having a boyfriend. I do not understand why a bright broadcaster would settle for pandering when he's clearly above that; he could be using his program to do solid sports journalism or explore the way sports affects broader society.

I listen to both of these shows daily on WJOX (the real call letters).
Romie - I hated this guy at first, but, as he says, give him 3 weeks and you'll love him. He's right. I love his show. He does have a strong stance against racism and homophobia. As far as him making fun of the LPGA and the WNBA...well,hell, so do I. The funniest comment Romie ever made was renaming the mullet haircut to the LPGA.
Patrick and Dibble - This is just easy listening. I enjoy the banter between these two. I don't know if Dan is a homophobe or not...could be. I thnk Dibble is just sexual and could care less if its guys, girls or animals.

What about the Sportscenter promo with Dan Patrick in the doctor's office where he apparently got a pen lodged in his esophagus "for the ninth time" and as the doctor's talking to him, Patrick starts to break down and cry...then the doctor very stiffly starts to put his arms around Patrick to give him some comfort, and Patrick breaks free and says in an annoyed tone of voice, "What are you doing?" Clearly Dan Patrick has issues.
And whatever happened to Keith Olbermann?

I listen to both local radio all sports stations here in Boston (850 & 1510) all the time. It's one of the things I like best about being in Boston - how sports crazy we are. I used to work third shift and the sports shows kept me company. I am a big fan of Teddy Sarandis on 850. All that being said, I am obviously torn sometimes with the homophobia that runs rampant on the airwaves. It seems so sophomoric, or just a little too easy to make the gay joke. John Dennis & Gerry Callahan's popular morning show is a perfect example, an otherwise smart and funny show almost always uses gay people as the butt of the joke.
