Full Version: Did cheerleader outfit save Indians pitcher's life?

Okay, that's a little misleading, but a shot was fired into the team bus headed to the Kansas City airport that hit pitcher Kyle Denney in the calf. He was wearing a cheerleader outfit complete with go-go boots as part of a rookie hazing thing ritual. Oh, those major leaguers and their drag!

QUOTE
Denney was shot in the calf and apparently the go-go boots he was wearing helped him escape serious injury.

Due to the boot, the bullet did not go very deep and was immediately removed by Indians trainers.

That story really belittles the fact that someone's going around shooting buses. Why isn't anyone outraged about that? The story dedicated several paragraphs on the go go boots and rookie hazing tradition. What? Is shooting the visiting team a common thing in Kansas City?

The link above was from a Columbus, OH TV station. Here in KC, on the local TV stations the shooting-at-busses part of the story is a much bigger deal than the go go boots. One local news website it gives a bit more info...

From nbcactionnews.com:

Police spokesman Darin Snapp said the team arrived at the airport before calling police. Swain said the Indians waited because trainer Lonnie Soloff was able to dislodge the bullet. Another police spokesman, Sgt. Tony Sanders, said people on the bus reported hearing ``what sounded like a firecracker'' and then realized that it was a gunshot. He said the investigation was hampered a bit by the fact that the bus continued on to the airport before police were called. He appealed for calls from anyone who was in the area at the time. ``We are doing our best to find out what happened, and we think somebody might have seen something,'' Sanders said. Sanders said later that a tip had led to identification of a possible suspect, who was not in custody.
The airport is a good 20-25 minute drive from where the shooting took place. And no, shooting the visiting team is not a common thing here. Even though we are frustrated as heck with our 101-loss Royals and 0-3 Chiefs.

Not to belittle the situation, by here's a story that has a picture of the outfit in question. Just in case you were curious . . .

If I weren't gay already....anyway, I don't know if it's more or less troubling that the bus may have just been fired upon at random, and not because it was known to be the team's bus.

Lordy, what a mess.
Btw, a friend pointed out that USC cheerleaders wear white tennis shoes, and not knee high gogo boots. His wardrobe faux pas actually turned out to be a life-saver.

Outfit Worn by Pitcher as Hazing Ritual May Have Slowed Bullet

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 30 -- Cleveland Indians pitcher Kyle Denney won't complain about having to dress like a cheerleader again. The white go-go boots that went with the outfit might have prevented a bullet from seriously injuring his leg.

The rookie was hit in the right calf by a shot that came through the side of the Indians' bus in Kansas City late Wednesday as the team traveled to the airport after a victory over the Royals. The bullet caused only a flesh wound, probably because of the tough leather of the knee-high boot, Denney and his trainers said.
....
Looks only a mother could love: Kyle Denney, wearing his rookie initiation outfit, talks to his mother after a game.

I'm glad he is OK. This pic cracks me up. I wonder if he tried to do the splits.

More bad luck for Kyle Denney -- he was hit in the head by a line drive in a minor league game and suffered a fractured skull. He was hospitalized for a couple of days.

QUOTE
The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons announced that Denney is resting comfortably at his home in Buffalo.

Bisons athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said Denney, a former University of Oklahoma pitcher, was experiencing dizziness and nausea on Monday. Tomczyk said tests revealed the starter had a ruptured ear drum and a cerebral contusion, which is more severe than a concussion. The contusion was caused by the brain jarring against the skull.
Scary.

Ouch!!!!! Hopefully he'll come back from the injury as quickly as Kaz Ishii did. Although this injury is defintely much worse with the brain contusion and all. eek!

Kyle Denney's been released from the hospital and will be speaking with the media at Dunn Tire Park(Buffalo) a half hour before game time tommorow.

Gotta wonder what was the better protection.....a pair of high heeled go go boots or the baseball cap he was wearing on Sunday???

Oh Leave it to KWG and ChiAthlete to post pics...LOL. Hey Guys...I'm back.

Anyhoo, Yes the cheerleading boots saved his hide. Then getting beaned with a line drive. Talk about a streak of freaky things. I vote for the Go-Go Boots, way better protection!
