Cattledog is quoted in an article relating to fan behavior in sports in the November 22 issue of The Advocate. The cover story of the issue is Sheryl Swoopes coming out. In the middle of the interview, on page 55, is the article titled Baseball behaving better written by Michael Giltz. He was writing, that at Yankee Stadium, the bleacher creatures used to single one fan who rooted for the opponent, would taunt him with gay slurs. When Giltz went to a game, this practice was finally stopped, and is no longer tolerated. The article also talks about gay taunting by fans, in general, and Cattledog gives his reaction to hearing gay slurs at a sports event. It's an article worth reading, not that I am biased or anything. smile.gif

I checked out The Advocate Website, and they don't have the new issue posted yet, so I can't provide a link yet.

Biased? Of course not! biggrin.gif wink

Some parts of the Nov 22 issue of The Advocate are now available on the magazine's website, but when I checked the table of contents, I didn't see a reference to the baseball article. So I guess I'll go and buy the print edition to see what our illustrious Cattledog said!

He'll autograph it for you for $20. But I hear he gives an Outsports discount.

I want to be a OMW too! I've already got the W part down pat!

I haven't commented on the article in The Advocate or my fame biggrin.gif because I actually haven't read it yet. Pat is supposed to bring a copy down tonight. By the way, for those of you that only know me as "Cattledog", I am the one quoted in the article that is a resident of Clifton, NJ.

Have the paparazzi started hanging out outside your door, Cattledog? smile.gif

I just talked to Kevin Federline...he said he'll be sending the Pavarotti's to VA instead.

Cattlepup - have you considered holding a press conference in a parking lot? You know, shoot some hoops, do some crunches. The boys in the media seem to eat that stuff up. wink

~Adam - we all know that you're the only one around here with his own personal Media Stalker. wink

The article still does not appear on the Internet. Here are some excerpts from the article in The Advocate.

Baseball behaving better

[Cattledog], a government employee in his mid 30s from Clifton, N.J., is a heavy-duty Yankees fan - who even frequents gay sports Web sites to talk about his passion - and also goes to games in hockey, soccer, and other professional sports with his partner of two years. Thus, he knows that hearing that kind of language is the price you pay if you want to go to a sporting event. “Usually I’ll just turn around and shake my head,” he says.

But [Cattledog’s] days of hearing perhaps the most notable example of gay slurs at Yankee Stadium are coming to an end. In 1996 the team began the tradition of playing the Village People hit “YMCA” between the fifth and sixth innings. Shortly afterward, fans in the rowdy bleachers began the tradition of singling out a fan of the opposing team, surrounding them, and singing new lyrics: “Why are you gay? I saw you sucking that D-I-C-K,” and so forth.

(The article then explains that fans are not allowed to do this any more, and the gay slurs have lessened.)

[Cattledog], who can’t get to many games at Yankee Stadium, is just hearing about the new policy. “Wow,” he says. “Wow. If the Yankees did that, I would be very proud. And if they lead, other teams will follow.”

That's hilarious!

But when are the Yankees going to have a Gay Day? All the cool teams are having them. wink tongue.gif
Cattledog
The Yankees now have such huge attendance, even when the Blue Jays are in town tongue.gif , that they have never really needed to have specific days for any groups. I think that gay days and other group days are great, and I am happy to see that other teams are doing it. But this is just something that the Yankees have never done for any specific group.

Well, I finally read the article. Firstly, I thought those nude pictures of me were very tasteful and I am very proud. Pat125, is too... wink Secondly, most of you are a bunch of smart-asses biggrin.gif ! Somewhat seriously, though, I cannot believe I had a 90+ minute conversation with the journalist and all he and the magazine could get out of me was "Wow!" and a couple of other quotes. But, from what I have read from Michael Giltz (I checked out some of his work online before agreeing to be interviewed), I will say that he is an excellent journalist. I do like the fact that I did get a chance to pimp my Yankees in a national magazine. "And if [the Yankees] lead, other teams will follow." Any of you that know me (and some of you that just know me from the Yankees threads) can definitely understand that. Also, I like being described as a "heavy-duty Yankees fan". That was cool! I wish they would have mentioned Outsports instead of saying that I "even frequent gay sports Web sites to talk about [my] passion". That made me sound like a gay sports internet lurker. I swear that I am not cheating on you guys--Outsports is my only gay sports Web site. Otherwise, I got a real kick out of the article.

I got a funny phone call today from a friend/colleague of mine from the Hampton Roads (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) area asking me how I got quoted in The Advocate. We haven't been in contact for a few years, but he told me that he just knew I was the guy in the article because I am the biggest Yankee fan that he knows (who just happens to be gay). I also sent the article to my aunt and uncle down in Florida, and they were so proud. My uncle knew what The Advocate was from his "days of living in Southern California". This whole thing has just been a kick for me. smile.gif
