Full Version: Gay Baseball Team Owner

I think it is funny how outsports talks about rumors of players that are gay but when it comes to owners they shy away. I saw Kevin McClatchy the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates in a gay bar in London last year. He was with a guy and they left together after being in the bar for over two hours. I asked around but everyone protects the rich and powerful. No one wants to admit he is gay or talk about it. Who else has run into Mr. Mcclatchy in a gay bar or knows about his hidden gay life.
DC_guy
Sometimes just because people don't talk about it doesn't mean it's hidden. Maybe columnists et al. realize that people don't feel a connection to the owners of teams like they do to the players. This is why people inevitably want to know more about their personal lives. It may be that this owner is out and it's just not news.
Joe in Philly
If he were out, it would be news.
RGMike
Hmmm... no wonder McClatchy doesn't want to part with Brian Giles. smile.gif

SportsJunky, what was the name of the bar you were at in London? I'm tired of the ones I go to when I'm there.

Is this a pic of the boy? There was only one other picture on Google and there's no pic on the Pirates official site:

If he is indeed gay, he would not be the only gay baseball team owner.

Care to elaborate on who the other gay baseball owner is that you are referring to ung?....or will you leave us in suspense -- or worse yet, cause us to guess?....as long as it's not Steinbrenner or Angelos I guess it can't be too bad, though.

Gay or nay, I think he's cute! biggrin.gif

Sorry guys. I will not say who is the gay owner I know. It's not my place to say so.

Kudos Ung! I congratulate you on your restraint.

( whispering very softly ) Send me a PM with the name! It's Steinbrenner, isn't it? wink biggrin.gif

Seriously though, I agree with you. Unless said owner is open and out, it isn't our place to out him or her.
ung
well.... it wouldn't be an outing per se. He is already out of the closet to those in his life. He just isn't known as gay to the general public.

Sorry, if his sexuality is a big secret, he's closeted, and it's nothing to act proud about. If you named him, it clearly would be "an outing". That is, if such a person exists at all -- which is, of course, a secret!

Living here in Pittsburgh I here all the rumors about Mr. McClatchy. ...

We can talk about it all we want to but like the players there is no room for acceptance of gays in professional sports.

(note from Jim Outsports: We will not print rumors about someone's alleged health status. this has been deleted out.)

I briefly met Kevin back in 1994, right after he became the owner of the Pirates. It was at a reception to introduce season tickets holders to the new owner. I remember how much interest there was in him, no doubt fueled by his being a young, attractive guy. Women were supposedly throwing themselves at him left and right.

After shaking his hand, my first impression was that he was very handsome and that he held his gaze and smile just a bit longer than most (straight)guys would. I also noticed that it looked like he "dressed" to the right. wink Then I told myself that I'm sure he's not gay and to stop kidding myself! Now, I wish I had chatted him up a bit longer! biggrin.gif

Over the years, though, I did hear the rumors about him, especially since he's a good-looking 40-ish guy who was never married.

Redsox... Give me a break! everything is so black and white to you. right? and what do you mean "if he exists at all". actually I know what you mean. and it really doesn't matter if you don't believe.
By the way, it's not a "big secret" as you call it. Just like the general public does not know that I am gay ...unless specifically told ... (and why should they?) it's the same with him.

If you wanna reject my answer. that's fine. really.

ung, if we can't ask, and you won't tell, can we at least speculate irresponsibly? wink

I'll lay even money on another gay owner being Jeffrey "You Call that a Gilt Frame?" Loria, and that Lil Davie Sampson is his Boy Toy. Any takers?

As for Kevin McClatchy...some handsome feller!

The same Jeffrey Loria who trashed the Expos and maneuvered to switch his ownership to the Marlins? No taker here, thanks.

Lots of speculation in the Northwest about a gay owner of a professional sports franchise. He's deep in the closet but everyone seems to know his story.

The media won't discuss it openly for fear of losing advertising revenues.

This was true a few years back when the owner hired (and then fired) a closeted coach. Everyone knew the coach's story but none of the major media outlets had the balls to at least acknowledge the rumors. Worse yet, the closeted coach was romantically linked with one of the local sports announcers (also closeted).

Who was the coach Paul Allen hired and fired?

You want more pics of Kevin McClatchy? Maybe I should've included him in the Pirate hottie competition, substituting him for the shirtless Reggie Sanders:

Handsome middle-aged guy. biggrin.gif Here's a couple more... 1, 2

Those pictures are great but they are all from the mid 90's. Kevin McClatchy has gained weight and lost a lot of hair and what is left is grey. I would have gone out with him if he would have asked 10years ago if he was negitive. But I am only 28 and he likes older Daddy types.
fenwayguy
Ung, it seems I've become prickly about "the closet", and I was off the mark. Apologies.

Certainly this gay baseball owner has the right to be as closeted or as open about his sexuality as he wishes. I do hope that he and any other owners who happen to be gay will take a personal interest in implementing gay-inclusive policies in their organizations.

Further discussion of my "issue" belongs in another thread, specifically "How Does One Define 'Out'?" wink.gif

Charlie in the Trees,
I am catching on. The closeted coach in question, I believe, was also a college coach that left that job in much controversy. The controversey, however, was in no way related to his being gay or even closeted. Things are getting clearer, however slightly.

My immediate reaction to 6Iron's and CITT's "tease" is that they were referring to the former Sonics b-ball coach who is now coaching the Pepperdine Waves....but that is admittedly pure speculation on my part with nothing else to base it upon other than their not-so-subtle geographical reference.

I agree with you Pittsteelersfan Kevin is older now than in those pictures. ... Does he go to gay bars in Pittsburgh? You said he has an older lover. Just curious what does he look like? Is he the Daddy type and what does his lover do for a living?

(Jim from Outsports edited this to remove a reference to an unfounded rumor he was referring to).

Hey! I'm innocent. I gave a name that I heard that may or may not have been part of a scenario set out by a previous poster.

And in a total and complete non sequitur (said for the lawyers), let me just say, once again: Trailblazers' owner and Microsoft gadzillionaire Paul Allen.

Not that this is relevant, but didn't Paul Allen once date Monica Seles???
ung
yes. they did.

SportsJunky:

Kevin's lover is older and looks like a x basketball player who has gained a little weight but is nice looking. He has grey hair, in his early 50's and is about 6'3.

(A note from Jim at Outsports: I edited this to remove speculation as to HIV status and sexual positions these people allegedly do. This is TOTALLY inappropriate for this board and will not be welcome.)

But thank you for your generous gesture.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's going to take more than a new president, GM, and manager to halt a 15-season losing streak. However, it looks like they're taking a step in the right direction. Let's say I'm cautiously optimistic. rolleyes.gif
