Full Version: Deliberately Injured Because You Were Gay?
Outsports Discussion Board > Outsports > Gays in Sports

"Take that, cocksucker!" was what I heard when, at age 16 and playing in a hockey game, the hockey stick whapped me up the rightside of my head.

True, I was an antagonizer in that game. Then, as now, it's a fact that players from the opposing team WILL get even; but I wonder.

I wonder if the word cocksucker and the slam with the stick would have even happened had I not been gay.

Was I called a cocksucker because it was a term we all threw around back then to anyone we wanted to piss off, or was it used because I actually was one?

Would I have been hit as hard had I not been gay?

Anyone else here believe you were deliberately attacked and injured in a sport because you were gay?

If so, what went through your mind? Did you fight back? Did you quit that particular sport or stick with it and become a tougher badass player?

We'd be interested in hearing your recollections and insights.

MMMMM , Well, it depends. Did the other team know you were gay at the time? If not, it probably just the usual jock banter.

You gotta remember, sports is about agressiveness, competitiveness, domination, and victroy. All very masculine attributes.

Add the attitude that gay guys are not welcome in the sports realm. Especically in youth sports where the young boys are trying to establish their spot as boys in relations to other boys. In the sports relam, being gay is viewed as soft, weak, not masculine...girlish. No young sports jock, or old one for that matter, wants that identity. Being male, we want to be known as men, masculine, not feminine, that's for girls and queer boys (whoops!!!. it's a vicious cycle.)

The end results is that in the midst of the actual play, the guys will use every means available to win. So as part as the agressiveness, the attempt to subjugate the opponent guys will call each other names.

Of course, as we get older and we learn what those words really mean, and depending on our sexuality, the significance of the words take on a whole different spin.

For the str8 guy in sports, the worst thing to be call is a faggot, cocksucker, fairy, queer, (did I miss any... ) because the same attitude developed as a kid still holds true. It has to hold true for them because it defines their masculinity under the rules of gender in a patriarchal society. And to be str8, a guy must follows the rules. For the gay guy, we violate those rules, and we prove those names to be true and their rules not true. We are what those str8 guys say,in a sense, we do like boys "that way."

But, on the same hand (just the opposite side), we know first hand, that being gay doesn't mean being weak, soft, or unmasculine or girlish. One may argue that the masculinity of a gay man is different than one of a str8 man, but it's there.

It does mean that the guy who called you a cocksucker, could, might, want you to ask him out for coffee after he ties to kick "yo faggot butt on the field..." Ok, maybe a beer, we are talking hockey players here, right...lol.

Thanks for posting satxbuddy!

Due to a set of circumstances which happened over the Summer before school started, that are WAY too long to put on a discussion board, it was known by then by a lot of people that I was gay.

You are right, though. Cocksucker was a term that I even used then to cut someone down.
