There was a very lengthy piece about Barry Bonds by David Grann in Sunday's NY Times magazine. One of those "Barry can be a jerk, but let's put his jerkiness in perspective" sorta things. In the middle of it, there's this paragraph about teammate Jeff Kent:

"One day when I was in the locker room, not long after Kent and Bonds came to blows in the dugout in which Bonds appeared to put his forearm in Kent's throat, Kent, about to take off his towel, asked a pack of reporters if there were any 'queers' or 'women' among them -- a remark that, especially in San Francisco, would have created a certain stir. Although he was surrounded by at least a dozen reporters who have seized upon any number of Bonds' remarks, none, as far I know, reported this. 'Is there a double standard because Kent talks to us?' one sports radio announcer told me, 'Definitely.'"

Nice to know someone had the guts to report it, anyway.

Kent's popularity with reporters has, I think, decreased significantly over the past year. Aside from the lying to cover up the motorcycle accident, the transcript from that spat he had with Bell, Bonds, and Baker did not paint a pretty picture.

JC, any links to that transcript? Or can you summarize it?

Gosh, it was quite a while ago. My recollection is that it started with Kent yelling at Bell about something that happened on a previous play. When Bonds yelled at Kent to shut the f*ck up, Kent & Bonds got into a physical confrontation. When Dusty Baker tried to separate them, Kent was yelling stuff like "You would take his side. It's his team. I want off this team."

You know, I just had to change most of my names...for some reason, I kept referring to Kent as Hewitt.

You know the old phrase: "Girls. Girls. You're BOTH pretty."?

When it comes to Kent and Bonds, I just want to yell: "Girls. Girls. You're BOTH unlikable, egomaniacal repugnant bitches from Hell."

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! CitT, that was one of the best lines I've heard in a good long time!

I've generally been of the opinion that while Bonds acts like an ass**** on ocaasion, Kent IS one to the marrow of his being.

And yet, if I were to fill out an NL MVP ballot today, after Bonds at the top (any Flat Earth Society members still object?) Kent is a very plausible #2. At least in the top 5 for sure. The player, not the jerk.

Yep - I totally seperate their on field ability from their personality. They may be a talented jerk- but I'm watching them play ball -not marrying them!
