We've added Mike Timlin and an incredibly homophobix ex-linebacker to
our list of jocks making anti-gay slurs.

I was surprised to see Mike Timlin on the Anti-Gay List, as I had thought he was previously on the 'pro-gay list.'
Comment when asked if it bothered him to play with a gay teammate...

Has he become born again?

I remember reading that Timlin was a Christian back when he was briefly with the Phillies (he was traded here as part of the infamous Scott Rolen deal and left after the season as a free agent). So his comments, sadly, come as no surprise despite what he previously said.

Well obviously makeovers are un-Christian.
God made you ugly, so you should stay that way.
As for the dissonance between Timlin's prior statements and Queer Eye stance, I think this is a good illustration of how homophobia is not simply a yes or no division. Timlin doesn't seem to be a full-fledged hater, but is clearly 'scared' of participating in an self-proclaimed game that celebrates queerness.
He also shows that he is capable of not judging people he knows (teammate), but will pre-judge strangers.

I thought almost the same thing when I read about the two comments - and I think there is also a component of dislike of effeminacy in his words. I just finished reading Coach Gumby's book on gay male athletes and homophobia in athletics. To use his concept, a teammate of Timlin's would have a lot of "masculine capital" - he would not act like a stereotypical gay man. That would make him less of a threat in the eyes of most heterosexual men, while the flaming queens of "Queer Eye" (although don't get me wrong, I LOVE them) are clearly closer to the stereotype.

Just a suggestion (maybe it's already out there), but why not make a list like the anti-gay list of all the supportive comments athletes have made? There are probably just as many on that list as there would be on the 'anti' list.

Yes. Unlike most people, his opinions get into the newspapers.

Although he hasn't made any slurs (that I've read), pitcher
Cal Eldred is no supporter of gay marriage.
QUOTE
Eldred leaned back in his chair and nodded. He was asked if he supports bans on gay marriage.
\"Hands down. Being a Christian, I believe in what God wrote in the Bible,\" he said. \"You're not supposed to have hate or dislike for the person. As far as I'm concerned, it's a bad choice. I look in the mirror and make bad choices every day. (But) you're not going to change a person's mind by being mean to them. The definition of marriage is between a man and a woman.\"

Whenever I see one of these quotes I just smile when I see the inevitable "like what God wrote in the Bible." Then it puts it all in perspective. These poor fools actually think God wrote the Bible.

Yeah, I live in the Bible Belt and it's surprising how many people seem to believe a printed copy of the King James Edition fell out of the clouds 2,000 years ago like the lid of the Ark of the Covenant at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

And you should see the look on their faces when you tell them that King James was a homo. As they say in the Mastercard commercials "priceless".

So the writer decided to do a profile of a possibly washed-up pitcher trying to get back to the big leagues, who hasn't been anything special in his career, and decided to plaster much of the article with the player's views on religion and politics? And naturally the player is a right-winger. Someone tell me again about this so-called liberal media?
