Question for you all.
With recent events as they are with St. Louis Blues Danton and the Gay rumors. Anyone hear rumors of other gay hockey players?
I heard a rumor a while ago about Dan Hinote of the Colorado Avalanche.
Wondering if anyone else have heard any rumors?
RGMike
Hockey probably has the fewest "rumors" of any major sport. There has been speculation about Eric Lindros, laregly because of his male, live-in "personal assistant" (or whatever the guy's title is).

Some years ago a straight guy I know told me that one-time Maple Leafs tough guy Wendel Clark was rumored to be gay (this guy claimed Clark's boyfriend was a Canadian figure skater!). About six months later Clark got married... he and his wife immediately pounded out two kids in less than two years.

So does that mean he can't be gay or the reverse?
RGMike
No, of course not. The implication was that maybe he was, er, trying to prove something. He did have a "macho" reputation as one of the toughest players in the NHL. I thought it was intersting that the marriage happened in the wake of the rumor -- like a lot of celebrity "engagements" and "paternity suits".

rumours? i heard rumours that Marc Denis and Vinnie Damphousse were gay.

I've also always wondered about Vinnie Lecavalier and Brad Richard's VERY close relationship ("we do everything together").

While I generally don't like to fuel speculation on an athlete's sexual orientation, I would be very happy to know that Brad Richards is 'one of us'. wink The man is adorable. And I saw that profile on Brad and Vincent too. Brad, who is from a lobster-fishing community in Prince Edward Island, played junior hockey in Quebec where he learned to speak French and became friends with Vincent the Thug biggrin.gif .

they played in Rimouski together, but if i'm not mistaken, they also played together (and roomed together) BEFORE that.

They've been on the same teams forever it seems. The quote ("we do everything together") was taken out of a french interview last year.. i just found it a bit odd. It was followed by "we go to the beach together, etc.."

it's really hard to tell though.. hockey players are too chickenshit to come out.

I just read in S.I. that Ray Ferraro , ESPN Hockey analyst, 18-year NHL veteran (and one of the sexiest men on TV, IMHO) is getting married -- to a woman hockey player! She's Cammi Granato , captain of the US national women's team. God knows I hate to stereotype smile.gif but check out her picture and tell me you don't smell something (you should pardon the expression) fishy. That sure looks like lesbian hair to me.

Maybe, maybe not. If not her, maybe some other members of the U.S. Olympic Team, who I saw here 2 years ago. They played China and won like 14-2 in a hockey exhibition.

Can't say that I got any sense of Cammi's orientation when I met her a few years ago, but she's a consummate competitor and very friendly/respectful to the fans. Her brother Tony says that she's the best player in the family, something I can believe having seen her team play at the All-Star game in Vancouver.

I vaguely recall many rumours about hockey players in the past that were rumoured to be gay. I know there was a lot of speculation about Doug Gilmour while he was in Toronto. I know a few people who met him and said that he was looking for a hookup. I've heard this on other occasions too. There also was a wild rumour that Stephane Richer was dating Canadian singer Roch Voisine while he was living in Montreal. I'm not sure how true that one is.

I also recall hearing that Cam Neely is gay, and I know that Glenn Anderson is gay as well. Quite a few years back, while he was in Edmonton, there was an article run about how his lover was found dead in his pool.

"I know there was a lot of speculation about Doug Gilmour while he was in Toronto."

there were lots of rumours about Wendel Clark.

That would all explain Don Cherry's surprisingly good view on Same sex marriages (as he told Michael Lansberg and everyone in Canada this week on Off the Record):

"will it cost me anything? if not, then they can do whatever they want. Of course, being an anglican, not in the church, but should they be able to get civilly married? if it's not costing me anything, sure!"

The rest of what came out of his mouth in that show was pure crap as always smile.gif

I wish somebody would hear a rumor about Paul Kariya--hmmm...dougnnu...no, my bad, wrong show.
Leph28
If Kariya's gay, then he's already taken (Selanne).
