This doesn't bode well -- a lesbian football player who came out in Sports Illustrated for Women, was criticized as "unprofessional" for "coming out as a lesbian in a national sports magazine and for joking about converting straight women on the team to lesbians"

The league fears that it will be "known around the world as a bunch of dykes"

Hysterical..and revealing. Discussing the fact that she's a lesbian is almost redundant after seeing her picture. Converting straight girls (or guys) is normal gay humor but taken out of context it just comes across as disturbing to many people both straight and gay...Just because she's a lesbian doesn't mean that she has tact or p.r. savvy..unfortunately..

A good story, and maybe it's true that she could have been more tactful in the original interview. She may be a little rough around the edges, but she looks pretty darn tough to me. I wouldn't mess with her!

BUT... Why is it that it creates such an uproar in the media when someone even suggests "converting" a person from straight to gay, yet when holier-than-thou types openly (and repeatedly) preach about the need to "convert" gays to straight, it usually passes without comment? Such hypocrisy.

(btw, they'd have their work cut out for them if anyone ever tried to "convert" me! Talk about your impossible dream!)

Three comments:

(1) Uproar in the media? This is an article from the Washington BLADE, the city's gay weekly. I think the uproar is fairly contained.

(2) I don't think that when "holier-than-thou types openly (and repeatedly) preach about the need to 'convert' gays to straight," this "usually passes without comment." I've seen such conversion groups repeatedly and viciously criticized in mainstream media, when the mainstream media even thinks about this. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this.

(3) As far as her converting women to lesbianism: I've seen her pic. Any woman that she could convert is already too far gone for the heterosexual world to reclaim. In fairness, when I look at myself in the mirror, I don't mistake myself for Mike Alstott or Adam Archuleta. I'm not capable of any acts of conversion either. But still ...
