Just posted a nice
first person by an out lacrosse goalie. This piece first appeared on Discourse, a site formed by 2 guys who came out on Outsports and they gave us permission to run it.

I remember reading that article on the other site. I think it was mentioned on this board or something. Note to those reading it for the first time -- you also have to click on the link in the article to witness the goal that he scored. Excellent. wink

I think Andrew may have frightened a few gay men back into the closet and convinced a few straight guys to play gay with this statement:
QUOTE
Now girls are not afraid to approach me in a social setting and put their arm around me or even worse, grab me in an inappropriate place.
That would give me pause.
Interesting that he came out to his family after going to college and coming out to friends first.

It is a great story, but the movie clip of him making a save in goal then running up the length of the field and scoring on the other goalie is pretty freakin' cool. Gutsy play.

The clip Curt is referring to is linked within the story.

Isn't that what I said when I wrote: "you also have to click on the link in the article to witness the goal that he scored"? I think you're just trying to pad your posting stats.

Off topic: Joe, I am going to train my one cat to sign on and post E. Then a second message with A. the G. Then L ... I'll catch up in no time!

I really enjoyed this piece and salute this athlete's courage...I sent it to a friend of mine, a college suitemate, whose partner played lacrosse for a top team while in college (he also played pro lacrosse, which is ironic since, even though I dig sports, I didn't even know they had lacrosse leagues. Wait, wait, yes I did, when I lived in Rochester...I remember now!) It really affected him...(in a good way)

Great story and great clip. Lots of support from me, trust me.
I did find one comment pretty funny though..... "Dartmouth, one of the most conservative schools in the country".....
Ummmmm... Maybe for New England? :-)

New England is hardly a total haven of liberalism. Providence, Rhode Island was once the largest slave port in the USA. That's how they became rich, in large part. I believe the biggest financier was even Jewish. Saints and sinners come in all shapes, sizes and colors - not to mention all geographical persuasions. This isn't to detract from young Andrew Goldstein's accomplishments. It only adds to it.

Dartmouth is no Yale in terms of gay-friendliness, but if it's anything like a certain college in New Jersey then coming out to the lacrosse team is a BIG deal. My freshman year roommate is/was a backup lax goalie here (not sure of his current status, haven't talked since then) and I would not have wanted to come out to him and his friends in a team-related situation. They are the biggest thugs on campus and probably present the least palatable coming-out situation out of all the teams here. Good for this Goldstein guy.

Congratulations to Andrew Goldstein, the subject of this thread, for being named College Sports Television Student-Athlete of the Week (as mentioned in Jock Talk yesterday). Way to go!

Congrats to Andrew Goldstein! His first person narrative opened the eyes of many. When the rest of the world finds out we just want to compete and be treated as equals, we will all be better off.
