TORINO, Italy (AP) -- Johnny Weir brought his candor -- and his particular need for creature comforts -- to the Winter Olympics.

"I am very princessy as far as travel is concerned and having a nice room and things like that. Sorry to say 'princessy,''' he added, laughing, "but that's what we do.''

Yeah, I just saw the same thing. Ryan Quinn wrote about what a shame it is that none of the current Olympic team is out. Johnny Weir's sounding kinda out, though....
DCBucky
The Wash. Post ran a profile on him today -- \"We always knew Johnny was a little bit different.\" -- his folks are very supportive and cool:

"Though the Weirs expected a football player when their first son was born, they never discouraged his distinctive interests, even when he shunned balls, sticks and toy guns. Johnny Weir fell in love with figure skating after watching skaters Oksana Baiul of Ukraine and Nancy Kerrigan of the United States during the 1994 Winter Games. He spent so much time attempting single axels on roller skates in the basement that his parents finally bought him used ice skates, and he continued to hone his skills on a frozen-over patch in the cornfields behind their home.

When they took him to a local ice rink, certain he would be enticed by the hockey leagues, he instead skated off by himself, doing figures on the ice. The hockey players decided it would be fun to fire pucks at him. He jumped over those shots. "We always knew Johnny was a little bit different," John Weir said.

"My child's not weird. ... Everyone else is."

I just wonder if he was enticed by the hockey players?

hmmm?

Thanks, DCBucky. I was preparing to post that link. I found the article in this a.m.'s dead tree edition quite fascinating.

Didn't Marilyn Monroe wear something like this in The Seven Year Itch?

Hey, at least the kid is confident enough to be himself. I applaud him.

I will never forget watching a professional figure skating competition of TV a few years ago. Kurt Browning has just gotten married (who knew) and he was explaining what a particular jump was to his wife. Don't you think a REAL wife would have known all of that when he's her bf, fiance and then husband? Beard, beard, beard.

I don't know why, but he's kind of hot!
Herr Tiggee
Jim, I swear you must be straight. You're attracted to a woman.

Bored with the Seahawks-Redskins playoff game, I switched on the US Men's Figure Skating and saw Weir in action. Yes, he's a bit fey but what can I say! biggrin.gif
Joe in Philly
He's something of a local boy!

QUOTE
Weir's personality blossomed in the residence he shares with his parents and younger brother in Newark, Del., where the family moved from farmland in Coatesville, Pa., to give Weir access to skating lessons.
And a quote from today's Phila. Daily News: "I want to be a role model for kids...that I was like, kids who feel like they can't say what they want."

I may have to throw my considerable support behind him. biggrin.gif

More on Weir, from Jock Talk.
Adam
Weir's nicely self-deprecating sense of self could make me reconsider my usual way of choosing which figure skater to root for. I tend to back any one who doesn't wear sequins (part of the reason I always liked Kurt Browning) but I may be rooting for Weir.

For Skater Johnny Weir, the Gold Is in the Bag. A Louis Vuitton, That Is.

TURIN, Italy -- Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has been out shopping every day, shopping so much that the Louis Vuitton store here, which he affectionately calls \"Louie\" and which he's visited six or seven times since arriving two weeks ago, paid for his cab recently when he was leaving.
....

Before starting the day's shopping, he meets us for cappuccino at a cafe near the Olympic Village wearing the aforementioned rabbit hand warmers, a Fendi scarf, True Religion jeans, which are his favorite brand (\"I like how my butt looks in them\"), a black leather coat with some sort of fur collar, and recently purchased red John Galliano sneakers, \"new for this season,\" which were supposed to be $416 but which he got for about $120 because the store's credit card machine was broken, and \"I made a scene because I had to walk to an ATM.\"
....

Johnny loves shopping with reporters, it seems...this is from the Phila. Daily News

QUOTE
We're guessing none of Vai Sikahema's former classmates at Brigham Young, nor NFL teammates ever called him \"honey\" or referred to themselves as \"a princess,\" but colorful Coatesville figure-skater Johnny Weir did while he and the NBC-10 sports director shopped in Italy.

Some of the flamboyant Olympian's fancy for fashion must have rubbed off on Vai, who tried on ultra-stlyish duds and even purchased some during the newsome twosome's shopping spree.
You can watch this segment, though I didn't hear the word "honey" used in it -- perhaps that was off-camera? Go to this link, on the right-hand side under "exclusive free video" click the button that says "more video," when the new window opens up, under the tab that says "NBC10 Olympic Zone" scroll down to "Vai Learns How To Shop With Skater."
