Does anyone happen to know when curling coverage is scheduled?
Enigma
Women happened this morning, and I'm currently watching Canada vs Germany in Men's Action
hockeyTom
Plus @ 2:00pm Pacific time, US mens vs. Norway I think curling too. On CNBC.
Jim at Outsports
I watched the US-Norway curling live for a bit before going to bed (midnight Pacific time last night).
MIB
Where can one find the broadcast times for individual events like curling? I couldn't dig it up.
hockeyTom
Go to NBC.com, click on Olympic Winter Games that should take you to the next sublevel, look for days/events and channel programming. Just a couple of clicks away. wink

MIB
That should be easy. I think I clicked on the wrong thing before.
Adam
If this year's coverage stays true to form to 2002, the latenight recaps will include lots of curling. That's where I watched it & loved it in '02.

I cannot believe the play on the United States' last stone against Finland. All they had to do was pick off the Finnish red stone closest to the button and they would have won. But, they over-analyzed their shot and oddly went for the difficult one. Bad decision! Finland 4, US 3 frown
MIB
I couldn't believe that game took 3 frickin' hours! Of course, 75% of that was NBC's incessant commercials and other filler crap.
MIB
BTW, did anyone else find the USA's Polish player kinda hot looking? He was the one with the goatee wearing glasses.

And the Finnish guy with the goatee--I'm not keen on goatees, but they didn't look too bad with those fuzzy ball ticklers.
fenwayguy
This one, right? Shawn Rojeski, Minnesota, 34, employed, single. smile.gif
MIB
Yeah, that's him. biggrin.gif

That pic does make him look a tad dorky, though. He looked much better on TV. Now I just have to figure out when the USA men's team plays next.

I noticed he started curling at 12 years of age.

He needs a husband. ohmy.gif

Not just Rojeski - another guy on the team, Joe Polo, is also pretty hot.
MIB
And HE looks much better than his picture! smile.gif

My favorite of the curlers so far has been the skip of the New Zealand team!! He was sooooo hot and I couldn't get away from his mouth and eyes-- really nice features. Mix that with a Kiwi or Aussie accent and I am completely under their spell.....

I think Rojeski and Polo are hotties too. The Canadian skip Gushue is a hot guy.

I'll second that, even if he is a bit young for me. I noticed him for the first time when his team lost to Sweden (the only team to beat Canada so far). Watching Brad Gushue (who is from Newfoundland) might just be enough to turn me into a curling fan! wink

I've been watching as much men's and women's curling as the wonderful networks of NBC rolleyes.gif have been willing to show. I am also a hockey fan. This morning, though, I am not an USA network fan. The stuggling US women's curlers came back from being down 7-4 in the 10th end to tie it up with the hammer going to the Russian team. Before the 11th end could even start, the network ripped away from the match for a bunch of commercials and Cammi Granato's analysis of the women's hockey game between USA and Sweden. USA network would not return to the curling match, which was tied at 7, and would have probably taken about eight minutes to complete at the very most. God forbid we would have missed the pre-skate for the women's hockey teams. I have always maintained that hockey (and soccer) have always been treated like shit by American networks. However, now that it is the Winter Olympics, apparently we cannot miss a thing about women's hockey. Unbelievable!

Ironic that a network gave priority to hockey over another sport. wink

So they just quit the curling coverage? They didn't switch it to another of their networks or anything? Why have Olympics coverage on all these cable networks if they aren't going to take full advantage?
charliecstl
It was a shame that they just cut away. It was actually quite exciting. Team USA actually should have won it at the end, but player conservatively. Of course, they scored three points on the final frame and so conservative is relative. They could have scored four and won outright though. Too bad because they lost on the next frame by a point.

It was pretty exciting to see the dramatic comeback at the end. Curling can be fun!!

Yeah, and unlike the USA women, the USA men are doing fairly well in second place. They really took it to a very good Swiss team today.
Cattledog
The US men continue to float upward in the standings with a big defeat of Germany today. While our British friends were able to pull their match out, the Canadians went down. Another complaint about the USA network... When the Germans conceded defeat to the Americans before the 10th end, the network (with at least twenty minutes left of coverage) could have switched to one of the tight games involving either Great Britain or Canada. Rather, they wasted time with tons of commercials, recapped other events that we already knew about (or did anyone else not hear that Lindsey Kildow wiped out the other day rolleyes.gif ). Poor, poor coverage... I mean, Americans are clearly interested--the US curling website crashed on Thursday with 12 million hits. So, I am really starting to believe that NBC is missing the boat here, regardless if the Americans win or lose in this sport.

Current standings:
01. GBR (6-1)
02. FIN, USA (5-2)
03. CAN, ITA (4-3)
06. NOR, SUI, SWE (3-4)
09. GER (1-5)
10. NZL (0-6)

The United States has two more head-to-head matches left and they are biggies: Canada and Great Britain eek! !
pat125
The men's team will probably have to win one of the games against Canada or Britain. If they are tied for fourth with either Finland or Italy, they would be out, since they lost to both of those teams.

I am glad that curling is getting a lot of coverage, but they could do a lot better. Most of the time, you miss the first couple of shots of each end. Although the last shots tend to be the most crucial, or at least more exciting, I like to see how the teams set up and get to that point. And USA Network cutting away from the women's game against Russia after they tied it up in the 10th end was appalling.
Cattledog
The American men continued their amazing run with a 9-8 win over previously first place Great Britain. The final score was not indicative of the match. The American studs dominated the Scots (all of the British team is from Scotland) from the start. The Americans have at least clinched a spot in the semi-finals. A win tomorrow over Canada would have the US tied with Finland (who is only one of two teams that has beaten the United States) for first place!
pat125
Great match by the U.S. men's team today over Great Britain. A win tomorrow over Canada, and the men's team tie Finland for first, but will be seeded second in the medal round, based on the head-to-head loss to Finland. If they lose, they will be in a three way tie with Canada and Britain. But since Canada also beat Britain, they would get the second seed, while the U.S. would be the third seed. So if I got this right, U.S. will play Britain in the medal round if they win tomorrow, but will play Canada in the medal round if they lose tomorrow.

There is a tie breaker match if teams are tied for fourth, but there are two tiebreakers for seeding. The first tie breaker is head-to-head. The second tie breaker is based on a "drawing to the tee" which is done before the matches begin. The results of these are not known until after the round robin ends.

Unfortunately, the women were mathematically eliminated today, although it would have been almost impossible for them to enter the medal round even with a win. Another devastating loss as they gave up three points in the last end.

Some of these curling players are just SO nice to look at. Curling studs: who would've thunk it? biggrin.gif
Cattledog
The US men's team played their final round robin game against Canada this morning and probably played their worst match of their Olympics in a 6-3 loss. Whether Canada is in their heads, or they just couldn't get the right shot, or they just didn't read the ice correctly, you cannot play Canada (who needed this win to get into the semi-finals) like this and expect to get a victory. The ONE team that I didn't want the Americans to face in the semi-finals is the one they are unfortunately going to face--Canada.

Here are the final standings in the tournament:
1. FIN 7-2
2. CAN, GBR, USA 6-3
5. NOR, SUI 5-4
7. ITA 4-5
8. GER, SWE 3-6
10. NZL 0-9

Both semi-final matches will be played on Feb. 22:
FIN vs. GBR, CAN vs. USA.
The medal rounds will be played on Feb. 24.

I am amazed at how popular curling seems to have become south of the border, apparently getting good tv ratings as well. While neither curling nor hockey are our official national sports (lacrosse is, go figure), curling is one of those sports that if you grow up in a small city or town almost everyone in Canada has played at one time or another and many companies use it as a team building / fun event for their staff in winter time.

I neverexpected to watchasmuchcurling asI've done. But, I guess, it helps that the US teamis winning AND that they are pretty good looking. Every single one of them. Joe Polo has to be the stud of the team though. He's the only one that wears the tight short sleeve shirt. Cute pics of him on the NBC website.
MIB
Nah, Joe's got this thing with his right eyebrow that I find annoying. tongue.gif

I'll take Rojewski over Polo, and I wouldn't mind Brad from the Canadian team to boot. biggrin.gif

Damn hosers kicked our asses today. That 9th end was a killer--5 points in that end alone. Yikes!

Yesterday morning on our local sports radio station (well, one of the two such stations, that is), WSCR-AM, host Mike North had a woman from the Chicago curling club as a guest. She was talking about curling in general and the Chicago Curling Club, located north of the city. They had some dates in February and March open for free curling lessons for anyone wishing to sign up. I browsed their web site www.curlingchicago.org to check out what they had to offer. Two hours later, ALL the curling lesson dates were booked. Amazing.

According to this woman, though, the Chicago Curling Club offers open curling on Friday and Saturday nights. She also said anyone can come in and for $10 they'll let you play one game and provide you the brooms and the stones.

I talked with a buddy of mine--he's also into curling this year--and we decided we're going to give it a shot on a weekend in March. I'm looking forward to it. It should be a hilarious blast!

I'm part of a group of guys who hang out and do stuff....roadtrip to ballgames, watch the superbowl and other stuff.....we've always wanted to cross the Peace Bridge and play a few ends at the local rink in Ft. Erie but haven't put things into place.....maybe now's the time.

They are closing some schools in Newfoundland,Brad G's home province, tomorrow so kids can watch Team Canada play for the gold in curling. Brad will become only the second Newfoundlander to win an Olympic medal, and possibly the first with a Gold. Good role model for kids.
charliecstl
The women's gold medal matchup today proved quite exciting. Sweden played very well until late when Switzerland was able to close. The score was tied at the end of regulation after Switzerland scored twice in the final end.

The overtime end went right down to the wire. The Swedish captain threw the final stone, knocked two Swiss stones out of the rings, and won with the final stone being all alone in the rings. It was really very intriguing.

Sweden now is the reigning world and Olympic champions.
Woody
I know Joe had something going on with his eyebrow...It annoyed me at first too, but now it kinda grew on me....LOL....But I wished I lived up north to play. I can see me getting into playing this. Just have shuffleboard here in Fla and I'm not 70. So, no interest in that... smile.gif

It was nice to see the US team take the bronze this morning. They played a very solid match and everyone was playing very high level stuff. Every shot seemed to find its mark. Except for one end where GBR scored three points, it would have been a bit of a runaway.

That Joe Polo guy is pretty darned ripped for what I think of when it comes to curlers. He fills out his shirt very nicely I must say. Of course, all the picture of him in his NBC Olympics profile show him with all of his hunting and fishing catches. Hard to create the fantasy around dead deer and fish on stringers.
Leph75
Canada and Finland in the final..

Schools in newfoundland are closed cuz kids get to watch the final and Gushue (a newfie).
Travelpat
**** SPOILER ALERT ***** If you've taped the men's curling final and do not know the results - read no further!

Great to see some Canadian men finally come through with Gushue and team crushing the Finns 10 - 4 in just eight ends. Six points in the sixth end did the trick. Gushue even missed a free draw for seven in that end!

It has been our women who have been so great collecting 13 of our 19 medals before today.

They must be going CRAZY on the Rock. (Newfoundland). Reading some of the quotes coming out of there this morning, they were treating this curling match as one of the biggest things EVER in Newfie sport history. Schools and businesses closed at noon throughout the province so that people could all watch the game live. They had 6,000 people in the St. John's hockey arena to watch the match there.

A nice way to pick up the spirits of all the country actually after the failure of our hockey team. I was in a fast food restaurant here in Toronto getting lunch when the radio station they had playing announced that the Finns had given up after 8 ends and that we had won the gold and a lot of people in the restaurant broke out into cheers. This medal is probably number 2 on the list of which medals were most important to the most Canadians, with Women's hockey a close third. So we did succeed in getting two out of our three most wanted Golds. Not bad.

Hey Charlie....I got to see an interview that Joe Polo did after one of their matches this past week. The sportscaster asked him to show a tattoo he had gotten for the team while in the Olympics. The tattoo was on his right shoulder blade and he wasn't too shy to rip off his shirt and show a very nice chest shot. I got to get a pic of that!!!

And a couple of those Finnish curlers (specifically the second, and the third) had that very muscular Nordic look going on. Canada wins, but the Finns were kinda nice to look at too.

I am making Brad Gushue of Canada hot jock of the day in tomorrow's notebook.

More like hot jock of the month! biggrin.gif

This probably isn't widely known outside of Canada, but the beautiful province of Newfoundland & Labrador is often nicknamed 'The Rock'. Seems quite appropriate for the home of the Olympic curling champs. smile.gif

Just to elaborate on Jim's story today about cutie-skip Brad Gushue, his mother was unable to attend the Olympics because she has been undergoing treatment for cancer in St. John's.

I heard that about Brad's mother, Marc. I think Brad shouldn't be alone right now. I'm sure some nice hugs would make him feel better. ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

The Rock is a place i'd like to visit soon. It seems like a very friendly place and nice play to visit.

Good job to that Canadian team, they made their country proud.

I think I found the video on the NBC olympics page.
Polo video page on NBC

Unfortunately I was not able to see it. I get "This video may not be viewed in your country." on the screen. At least I can look at the players album.
