While our mavens here at Outsports have gotten it right in today's tops and bottoms, I've noticed several major media outlets heralding Vonnetta Flowers gold medal in the women's two man bobsled as the first _medal_ for an African American in the winter games. However it is, in fact, merely the first _gold_ medal. The first medal went to figure skater Debi Thomas at Calgary in 1988. Thomas won bronze behind the legendary gold medal performance of Katarina Witt (both skated their long programs to Carmen) and the hometown sentimental favorite silver medal performance of Elizabeth Manley.
