I know it's way early to talk about this, but how does tennis handle the Olympics, in terms of players skipping regular tournaments to play? Will they schedule the tour around the Olympics? Will they protect players' points from the previous year if they agree to participate?
I know Mats Wilander has a lot to say on the subject in this ESPN article.
A key point: The 2004 Olympics in Athens will be finishing the week before the U.S. Open traditionally starts. If the tennis portion coincides with the men's or women's Canadian Opens, the defending champions would be foolish to risk hundreds of points, and possibly their US Open seeds, in my opinion.
Moreover, the Greek Olympics will have tennis on clay. Which means players will be taking a week off from hard-court tournaments to participate in this event.
I wholeheartedly agree that the Olympics should be a kind of Super Davis/Fed Cup event - team format, the tour shuts down for that week, maybe even skip DC/FC that year. Anyone else have thoughts on this situation?
Also, anyone wanna bet that Daniilidou will win the gold??
