NBC Sports beat out ABC and FOX for coverage of the 2010 & 2012 games for a whopping $2.2 billion! With this amount of money, why do I feel some under the table promise for the 2012 games to be held in New York? Games that are held in the United States add up to incredible ratings (Los Angeles, Atlanta, Salt Lake City). NBC is not going to dole out this type of money for the games to be held in Rome!
Just how old would Bob Costas be anyway in 2012?

Oh joy, more scintillating NBC coverage. Though I shudder to think what Fox would do with the Olympics.

Who knows though...May be we will be able to once again see Matt Lauer in a lycra body suit...It could be white this go round...A possible chance for a good jock-strap shot

I would be in heaven!

It'd be nice to see what ABC did with the Olympics. They have ABC and then the 2 ESPNs to do coverage on, not to mention some of the other stations they have. It would sure beat watching the Olympics on CNBC.

I was ranting about NBC's coverage in the Postseason baseball thread, so I'm wondering:
What kind of arrangements are going to be made for people, like me, who want to watch the events, not some softly lit/tinkly music "Up Close and Personal" bullshit about how some athlete overcame asthma at age 9, against all odds mind you, to become The Champion They Are Today.
I know NBC used their cable affiliates a lot for that, but is the pay-per-view thing going to be tried again? Or am I going to have to rely on my friends satellite dish to get foreign coverage?
Any insight is much appreciated.

The pay-per-view deal was not exactly popular. I remember the barrage of Letterman jokes when they tried it. I don't know that we'll see that again. I assume the coverage will be like it has been in recent years: split between NBC, CNBC and MSNBC.
Maybe, since they also have Bravo in their stable of networks, they could put the figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics on Bravo with guest analysts the Fab 5 from Queer Eye...

Yeah, I remember the pay-per-view deal was a big bust. I think the TV climate has changed since them, what with the popularity of satellite dishes etc. I mean, if it was reasonably priced--I have no idea what that might mean, however--I'd buy it in a second to watch just the sports; no puff pieces, no talking heads. The 50 meter swimming is done? f**k poolside interviews, cut right to the javelin toss. Etc.
