Swim Record for NYC Team

Four members of Team New York Aquatics broke a national masters record in the 4 X 50 meter Mixed Medley Relay in the 160-199 age group previously held by San Diego Masters since 1999. With a time of 1:59.62 at the Gay Games they eclipsed the old record of 1:59.93 by more than three-tenths of a second. Their next goal is breaking the world masters record of 1:58.79.

The mixed medley is a masters swimming relay where two men and two women swim one of each of the four strokes. Janet Harris (41) lead off the backstroke leg with a time of 34.46. Jack Mackenroth (37) swam the breaststroke leg splitting 31.18. Todd Cooper (44) split a 27.08 for the butterfly and Maria Anderson (43) brought it home with a scorching 26.9 in the freestyle. Team New York Aquatics finished more than eight seconds ahead of the second place team and would have beat all the other relays in the event in the two younger age brackets.

The Gay Games held a press conference to discuss the record but unfortunately Janet and Maria had already flown back to New York because of work obligations and only Jack and Todd were able to attend. This is the first national record for the relay team.
