This Couple Goes to the Mat for Each Other
For Michael Faraci and Kris Landher, the couple that grapples together stays together.
Faraci (left) and Landher were media darlings at the Gay Games wrestling event Monday. They were peppered with questions by writers, shot extensively by photographers and interviewed by a drag queen. Ah, celebrity!
The story of two New York City guys who wrestle in the same weight class (145 pounds) was interesting, as was the fact that they each won medals (Faraci a silver and Landher a bronze). So was the fact that they wrestled each other in the tournament, with Faraci winning, 12-2.
Both were nonplussed about having to face each other. ?Every point he got he earned,? Landher said. ?We both love to wrestle.?
They met two years ago when Faraci, a stylist, cut Landher?s hair. Both musicians and singers, the two started collaborating and formed a band, Black Light Blue. They soon added wrestling as a common interest.
Faraci has been wrestling for seven years and won a gold at the Amsterdam Gay Games. Landher, one of 12 children, started training only ?a year and two days ago.? On Monday, they shared the podium together and the spotlight.--Jim Buzinski
Thumbs Up: The wrestlers at the venue raved about the organization of the tournament, with veterans of past games calling Sydney the best ever. The only mishaps occurred on the mats, with one wrestler suffering cracked ribs and another being carted off on a stretcher.
A Coffee Wizard: I was fascinated watching this owner of a coffee shop in downtown Sydney make lattes. A certified expert barista, the man painted exquisite floral designs on top of each brew, using the brown residue and a stylus. They were almost too beautiful to drink. Jim Buzinski |
