It's How You Play the Game

TODAY'S NEWS AND NOTES:

There are many exceptional athletes at the Gay Games, playing in virtually all sports. But participation remains at the root of what the Games are all about.

This inspires crowds as events to cheer for athletes who are struggling, yet trying to do their bests. For example, a competitor in the men's walk had to complete six laps while everyone else had finished. The crowd constantly gave him encouragment and roared as he came down to the finish. It was a scene repeated as venues throughout Sydney.

Quotable: Some of the best lines we heard in recent days:

--"If you get anywhere near the goal, no fiddily-flappy, fancy stuff. Just bloody boot it." --Sydney City Flyers women's soccer team coach Clare Rogers to her charges at halftime.

"Do you think we have time to go to the gym? -- two "Muscle Marys" to each other an hour before the Opening Ceremonies.

"I have a cramp in my ass and need a massage." A sprinter after completing his race.

"If I go topless, you're not going to notice anything different." --a flat-chested Melbourne women's soccer player to an inquiring photographer.

Aussie-isms: Our favorite Australian expression is "no worries, mate," which sounds like "no way, mate" the first time you hear it.
