Gay Games VI Comes to a Close
by Cyd Zeigler
All good things come to an end - and so it was with Gay Games VI Saturday night. The closing ceremony left a bit to be desired: the barbecue that was supposed to happen turned into more of a picnic / street fair with a few forgettable speakers. However, the memories of these Games will stay with me, and certainly the other 13,000 athletes, forever.
These were my first Gay Games, but they certainly will not be my last. As I sit in an internet cafe on Oxford Street now on Sunday evening, a full day since the Games officially closed, I'm left with a bit of an empty feeling: the events are over, the athletes are gone, and the cloud-cover has finally overwhelmed the sun that has dominated the thermometer for the last ten days.
In time, the emptiness will go away, replaced by some of the wonderful memories that the Games have implanted in my mind, and by the friendships and events that will grow out of them.
Two of the new friends I have made were Brian and Brandon (above, with me at the Opening Ceremonies) - two guys on my track team from L.A. whose company I enjoyed a great deal in the last week. They helped me get ready for my races, calm down after them and, with Wayne Anthony, Todd, John, Leo and the rest of our team, they helped make my stay in Sydney an incredible one.
In the coming weeks, we here at Outsports will be posting more pictures and more stories from the Games. We would love to hear the stories, and see the photos, from the athletes at the Games. If you have something to say about the Game Games, write your story and send it along to mail@outsports.com; we're looking forward to sharing as many stories with as many other people as possible. |
