Grand Rapids Pride 5K Scheduled for June 9

The Grand Rapids FrontRunners are staging the eighth annual Pride 5K - a five-kilometer race and fitness walk - on Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids. The Pride 5K is a celebration of gay and lesbian pride – and all people, gay and straight, are invited to participate. They encourage participation of fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, best friends and partners to share the experience and celebrate diversity, fitness, and loving relationships.

The Pride 5K is being held within the boundaries of Riverside Park, and offers a scenic route with beautiful views of the Grand River and the City of Grand Rapids, unobstructed by traffic. Runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate.

The 5K race and fitness walk will both begin promptly at 9:00 am. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners in each age group. The fitness walk is a non-competitive event with no age divisions. Each registered runner and walker will receive a T-shirt, and all finishers will receive a finishing gift. Cost of pre-registration is $15.00 for entries postmarked by May 31, and $20.00 for late registrations. Entry forms may be downloaded here

Proceeds are donated to non-profit charitable organizations. The 2002 recipients are:

GLSEN Grand Rapids – Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network of Grand Rapids – strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation, and welcomes any and all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or occupation, who share this philosophy.

The Lesbian and Gay Community Network of Western Michigan - whose mission is serving the LGBT Community of West Michigan through advocacy, coalition & education.

The mission of the Grand Rapids FrontRunners is to promote a health and fitness focus in the gay, lesbian and bisexual community; to provide an opportunity for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and friends to participate in regularly scheduled runs/walks; and to promote and encourage member participation in local, national and international competition.

For further information on sponsorship, participation, or volunteering assistance for the Pride 5K, call John McElwee at 616-285-7132 or David Morris at 616-774-8282, e-mail to GRFrontRun@AOL.COM, or write to the Grand Rapids FrontRunners at P.O. Box 1388, Grand Rapids, MI 49501-1388.
