Called Out: The Media, Homophobia and Professional
Sports
Thursday, 8/29/02, 7:15 p.m., Public Theater, New York City
The New York chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association wants to "Take You Out" for a special evening that includes: a new hit play...a reception...and a lively discussion.
(When was the last time you had a date this fun?)
Join us when our evening starts with a wine reception, followed by an NLGJA preview of the U.S. premiere of Richard Greenberg's controversial new play "Take Me Out." Wowing the critics in London, "Take Me Out" is about the ripple effect a baseball player's coming out has on his team, the media and the American public.
The play concludes with a panel discussion on homophobia in sports and the media's coverage of athletes who may or not play on our team. To date, confirmed panelists include author Dan Woog (JOCKS; GAY MEN, STRAIGHT JOBS);
Michael Muska, the country's first openly gay college athletics director; and sports writer Allen St. John (VILLAGE VOICE).
Other guests, including cast members, have also been invited to participate; more panelists will be announced soon.
Tickets are $40 each (normally $45), plus a small handling charge. Includes wine at reception, show, and panel event.
To purchase tickets, go to www.nlgjany.com and click on "calendar." Under the listing for this event, you'll find a way to pay online through
PayPal. Tickets will be held at the door for all buyers. A limited number of seats are available -- first come, first served.
