Records Fall at IGLA
Meet

SAN FRANCISCO/PALO ALTO--When
queers take over the airwaves, rating go up. When they jump in the
water, records fall.
It's pretty much a staple of the
International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics Championship meet to see dozens
of IGLA records fall by the wayside. But it's also not just about
records.
Swimmers of all levels and ages exceed
expectations, being driven by the adrenaline of the situation and the
support of hundreds of their fellow queer swimmers to better their
previous bests. For example, not only did Seattle's Rick Peterson
shave nearly a second off the IGLA age-group record in the 200
freestyle (in 2:17 and change), West Hollywood's Ryan Tu cut a
whopping 39 seconds off his previous personal best of 4:50 in the same
event.
The grins and the cheers were the same
for both accomplishments.
Meanwhile, the West Hollywood A men's
water polo team continued the dominance over the rest of the field it
displayed in Sydney at Gay Games VI (where they won the gold). They
won their two round-robin games by a combined score of 27-1. Even the
West Hollywood B team was dominant, beating Toronto 21-1 and San Diego
10-3.
West Hollywood's women's team is on the
other end of the 4-team field, going 0-2 in a pool that saw Seattle
take the top seed for the playoffs on Sunday.
The event wraps up Sunday with more
swimming events (which will determine the team competition scores),
platform diving, water polo finals, and the ever-popular Pink
Flamingo.
