D.C. Wins Gay Super
Bowl III
BOSTON--The Washington Monuments, making their first appearance, went
unbeaten to win Gay Super Bowl III in rainy Boston on Columbus Day
Weekend.
The two-day
tournament featured seven teams--Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston,
San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles--making it the largest gay
flag football tournament ever. Saturday's round-robin play was held
under mostly sunny skies, but Sunday's playoffs went off in a day-long
cold rain.
Washington
defeated Chicago, 27-21, in the championship game that was well-played
despite the playing conditions. In the semifinals, Washington
dramatically held off Boston, 21-20, while Chicago defeated San Diego.
The quarterfinals saw two-time defending champion Los Angeles lose the
game and its 15-game gay tournament winning streak, being beaten 29-20
by Boston.
Chicago defeated Atlanta and San Diego defeated San Francisco in the
other quarterfinals.
Former All-Pro
New England Patriots linebacker Andre Tippett was a special guest on
Saturday, tossing the ceremonial coin. Tippett, who attended at the
request of the Patriots, said he thought it was important to show
solidarity with the gay community and try to help break down barriers
in sports. He was very cordial and friendly and looked like he wanted
to suit up and play. The Patriots also donated official NFL footballs
to each of the participating tournament teams.
Gay Super Bowl IV will be held in Atlanta on Oct. 9-10, 2004.
