Miami Mavericks win Florida Cup team tennis title
KEY
BISCAYNE, FL – The
Miami Mavericks brought home the coveted crystal
Florida
Cup for the first time since 1993 after clinching the
championship with
58 match wins over
Advantage Tampa Bay (44 match wins),
South Florida
Tennis Club - Fort Lauderdale (40 match wins), and
Orange Blossom Tennis Association – Orlando (2 match
wins) on November 11th and 12th.
The 2006 Florida Cup attracted 69 players from throughout
the state and was hosted at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne,
site of the “fifth major” professional tennis tournament,
the Sony Ericsson Open.
"For
more than a decade the Miami Mavericks have fallen short of
winning the Florida Cup," said Charlie Alvarez, captain of
the 2006 Miami Mavericks team. "Last year we made great
strides in recruiting members and improving our training,
and the hard work finally paid off this year with a decisive
victory. It was a great weekend for the Miami Mavericks."
Former Major League
Baseball player Billy Bean is a member of the Mavericks and
helped them win the title.
The Florida Cup, founded
in 1991, is the annual team event between the gay tennis
communities of Orlando,
Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.
The Miami Mavericks Tennis Club is a nonprofit Florida
corporation dedicated to promoting tennis within the gay
community in the greater Miami area. The group hosts a
variety of charity sports events including the Art Deco
Tennis Championship XII January 12-15, sanctioned by the
international
Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance and also held at Crandon
Park in Key Biscayne, home of the Sony Ericsson Open.
