Try these two college football games on for size:

Kentucky 43, #1 LSU 37 (3 OT)

Oregon State 31, #2 Cal 28

Wow! I got a chance to watch the fourth quarter of the LSU game and the whole Cal tilt and the results have totally scrambled college football, giving one more reason for a playoff.

LSU blew a 27-14 lead as Kentucky never stopped playing. The Tigers’ last gasp in OT ended when they could not convert a 4th-and-2. Bye, bye No. 1.

That left Cal just needing a win to claim the top spot but the Golden Bears fell behind 31-21 and a last-minute rally ended when redshirt freshman QB Kevin Riley (playing for the injured Nate Longshore) made a bonehead play that will haunt him for a long time. Cal was inside the Beavers’ 15 with no timeouts and 14 seconds left down by three. Riley had to not take a sack or gain yards short of the goal line or first down — throw it away if need be and kick a field goal. But as the play unfolded, Riley decided to run(!) and got tackled at the 10 and the clock ran out. Cal coach Jeff Tedford angrily threw his clipboard down and Riley looked stunned. So much for Cal being top ranked.

So who’s No. 1? Ohio State, probably, with Boston College No. 2 and South Florida No. 3. All three are unbeaten and there is no way a one-loss team like LSU, USC or Oklahoma deserves to be ranked ahead. There is no dominant team this season, which means we will likely get another BCS title game that will leave some deserving team out. There is a one-word solution: Playoffs. —Jim Buzinski
