The vuvuzela was in full force at the opening ceremony. As I tried to interview people on camera a couple hours before the start of the ceremony, this loud, obnoxious noise (there is no other word for it than “noise”) emanated from a corner of the teams’ gathering spot. Sure enough, it was Team South Africa and their vuvuzelas. There were only about five or six people with them, but it was enough to make me cringe. I understand now why so many visitors and athletes in South Africa for the World Cup complained about these noisemakers; I can only imagine what 10,000 of them would sound like honking at the same time.

I was doubly concerned when I learned that it was Jim who asked them to start their noisemaking! He was accused of being many things for attacking the vuvuzelas during the World Cup.
