DePaul's student body president is a gay athlete

New, comment

Anthony Alfano was deep in the closet when he entered DePaul University, America's largest Catholic university. Just three years later he's openly gay and was elected the school's student body president. The openly gay part is recent: He came out last month as part of National Coming Out Day. Still, other students have known for years. He told the Windy City Times:

I think the overall impact I am making in Chicago is really just helping to push the needle a little further for progressive change. Showing youth in the city and around the country that they can make a difference, and that they can be who they want to be without fear in society. I hope that Chicago embraces me coming-out as the student body president at the largest Catholic university in the nation as a sign that times are changing and people are becoming more tolerant and accepting of others for who they are.

Alfano has played hockey since he was a toddler; He now plays with the Chicago Gay Hockey Association.
