The Phoenix Hellraisers (right) won their third straight Pride Bowl last weekend, beating the San Diego Bolts in the final, 41-33. The Pride Bowl is the annual gay flag football tournament in Chicago held the two days before the city’s pride celebration. In the third-place game, the New York Warriors avenged their loss in the championship game of last year’s Gay Bowl, beating a combined Los Angeles-South Florida-Michigan-Denver team, 25-20, in a laugh-filled game. The Chicago Spin Flames took home their first trophy since winning Gay Bowl V, beating the Denver Mountain Tops in the consolation final, 33-20.

Special congratulations go out to the Jacksonville Surge, who won their first tournament game ever this weekend. In fact, they also got their second tournament win!

While gay flag football has long been dominated on the national scene by the uber-intense Gay Bowl, it’s great to see other tournaments like this in Chicago, Palm Springs and Ft. Lauderdale pop up. I already can’t wait for next year!
