Former Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas has waded into the same-sex marriage debate, standing behind Chick-fil-A's opposition to gay nuptials. Thomas was reacting to public comments by Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-A's president, where he said: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.' "

Wrote Thomas on his Facebook page, where he reprinted several of Cathay's comments: "I stand with Chick-fil-A." His post got more than 1,500 "likes" and has close to 1,000 comments, both supporting and condemning him.

Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo, whose team lost to Thomas’ Bruins in the 2011 Stanley Cup finals, took a shot at his adversary, posting on Twitter:

Hey guys remember 2y ago in the Stanley Cup Final when people thought I was the crazy goalie?Well I still might be, but NOT the craziest one

An unidentified Bruins player told this to WEEI radio: “He isn’t playing next year, which means he’s not my teammate, which means I don’t have to react to his Facebook posts.”

Two Bruins — Shawn Thorton and Zdeno Chara — have voiced support of the You Can Play Project, encouraging support for gay players. The Project, on its Twitter page, steered clear of the Thomas story, saying: “For those asking, we have no reaction to Thomas’s statement. We are solely concerned with LGBT equality in sports.”
