It was certainly a big year in sports for LGBT people. Never before have so many come out in one year, and the year isn't over yet! Hint hint. Towleroad's annual review of the most powerful comings out of the year includes lots of people in sports, and not just the "big guns" like Michael Sam and Derrick Gordon.
Says Andy Towle, the founder and editor of Towleroad:
When it comes to coming out, 2014 was certainly the year of the athlete.
Of the 72 people on our list this year, more than 1/3 come from the sports world – football, baseball, boxing, tennis, long distance running, hurling, basketball, rowing, and diving. Many of these athletes are making a name for themselves in college sports, many in conservative places.
Outsports is certainly proud to have been the publication where so many of those athletes chose to tell their story.
