This week Michael Sam will be the first openly gay player to ever be drafted by an NFL team, and once he's signed with said team he'll be the first openly gay active NFL player in history.

It's a huge moment for the LGBT community, and one many thought was impossible just months ago. To build excitement, members of the LGBT Sports Coalition will be tweeting #SamFans all week with information about Sam and the Draft. And we encourage everyone to tweet out messages of support like:

I'll be cheering for Michael Sam during the NFL Draft, May 8-10 #SamFans

As the suggested tweet says, we don't know which day he'll be drafted. The NFL Draft is divided into three days:

  • Thursday, May 8, 8pm-11pm: Round 1
  • Friday, May 9, 7pm-11pm: Rounds 2 & 3
  • Saturday, May 10, 12pm-8pm: Rounds 4-7

While the last eight SEC Defensive Players of the Year have gone in the first round, Sam will almost definitely not be drafted on Thursday, and he most likely won't be selected in the second round. His best chance is the third round, so the real "Sam Draft Watch" will start Friday afternoon.

The chances of him not being drafted at all are virtually zero.

This is a time to celebrate for our community. So tweet, Facebook, and get your popcorn ready. The Draft will be aired live on ESPN and the NFL Network.
