The gossip mills in Australia were abuzz late last week over news that the now openly gay Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe, 31, was dating also-out pop singer Ricky Martin, 42. But Thorpe's agent says it's not true.

"I think someone is [putting] you on," Thorpe's manager James Erskine told Andrew Hornery, gossip columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald. The rumor says that Thorpe was being paid $500,000 by an undisclosed publication for a tell-all about his relationship with Martin.
Some of the rumors may have been fueled by a tweet Martin sent to Thorpe after the swimmer came out in July: "Congrats @IanThorpe! Brave man! Happy for you! Millions appreciate what you've done! Proud of you! #SelfLove"
These rumors are a sign of progress. Both men are out, so there is no sense of shaming either of them, and the rumor is little more than two guys are dating. Speculation about straight celebrities is rampant, as everyone knows, so it's kind of cool that we have openly gay celebs to gossip about.
