Drew Martin has been hired by the Univ. of Texas to a high-profile position as the new Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs, a powerful position in one of the highest-profile athletics departments in the country. It’s a reflection of Martin’s excellent track record in college sports, and a commitment to inclusion by Texas.

The hiring announcement by the University did not shy away from Martin being gay, saying “Martin and his husband, Blake Macon, were married in Fort Worth in 2015.”

Martin also mentioned his husband in a statement released by Texas.

“My husband and I are looking forward to moving to Austin,” he said. “It’s a place we’ve always thought about living, and we look forward to getting here.”

Martin came out publicly in 2014 in a story on Outsports.

Martin is now a part of the Texas athletics department inner circle, a six-member cabinet designed to shape the direction of Texas athletics.

Since coming out publicly as gay, the then-TCU associate athletics director has excelled in his work at Texas Christian while simultaneously working to build inclusion efforts for LGBTQ people in college athletics.

Congratulations to everyone involved for a great hire who will contribute to the Univ. of Texas, and a statement that, regardless of sexual orientation, you can make it big on the biggest stage in college sports.
