Joanna Harper has dedicated her life to understanding and educating people about transgender athletes, the science behind athletes transitioning, and the effects these things have on policy. She is at the forefront of research into trans athletes, and she has been a part of policy discussions at the International Olympic Committee.

Harper joins me to talk about all this and more in the latest episode of the Five Rings To Rule Them All podcast. Her book, Sporting Gender: The History, Science and Stories of Transgender and Intersex Athletes, is the launching point for a lively conversation, in which she talks very specifically about how and why the IOC trans-athlete policy looks like it does.

Harper is one of the world’s leaders in this space, and her position in this worldwide conversation will continue to strengthen with her current research project, a definitive look into the effects on athletes of transitioning genders.
