At least a third of the delegation sent to the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony by United States President Joe Biden is publicly out as LGBTQ.
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, who is apparently not LGBTQ and is the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, heads the U.S. delegation for the event.
The others include:
- Denise Campbell Bauer, U.S. Ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco
- Laphonza Butler, United States Senator, California
- Robert Garcia, United States Representative, 42nd District of California
- Chaunté Lowe, Member of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, four-time Olympian and Olympic bronze medalist, Track and Field
- Briana Scurry, two-time Olympian, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and World Cup Champion, Women’s Soccer
Scurry was part of the US Women’s National Soccer Team that won multiple medals at the World Cup and Olympics.

As part of the Closing Ceremony at the Paris Olympics, the flag bearers for Algeria and Taiwan will be the two boxers who have been at the center of so much public and media controversy and debate.
Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting have been the center of critique from the International Boxing Association and allegations of failed chromosome and testosterone-level tests.
The IOC and current president Thomas Bach have said forcefully and clearly that both Khelif and Yu-ting qualify by current regulations to compete in the female category. They each won gold in their respective boxing categories.
Other out LGBTQ people have been selected to represent the United States at the Olympics, including Billie Jean King and Brian Boitano.
