People are calling it the rugby equivalent of the royal wedding when Team USA rugby sevens star Alev Kelter proposed to her girlfriend, fellow rugby player Kathryn Treder in Paris.
In a video posted to Instagram, skateboarding champion Heimana Reynolds filmed the two women, both Alaskan natives, as Kelter proposed in Paris after the U.S. won the bronze medal, its first for women’s sevens rugby. The montage includes Kelter’s 96-year-old grandmother congratulating the two women.
“@alevkelter went straight from getting bronze to getting down on one knee!! Here are some captures from that special moment🫶🏼,” Reynolds wrote.
“Back story — I have never done any sort of proposal photography but when @alevkelter told me her plan and asked me if I would like capture this moment, I felt absolutely honored. I am so thankful to Alev and the Kelter family for welcoming me in and trusting me to capture this once in a lifetime moment🖤 I am so happy for you guys.”

Treder, who plays rugby 15s for USA Rugby, wrote this of her soon-to-be wife: “Alev, you’ve been grinding, fighting, and putting your head where people don’t want to put their feet. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance has payed off in the most incredible way. Now, you get to add a bronze olympic medal to the long list of your incredible accomplishments!”
Kelter is a member of Team LGBTQ in Paris who just had one of the best weeks of her life. An Olympic medal and a proposal is quite the combination.
