Cleveland Browns issue statement on Tank Carder's anti-gay tweets

Team distances itself from linebacker's comments

The Cleveland Browns have issued a statement regarding the anti-gay tweets of rookie linebacker Tank Carder:

These comments are certainly not reflective of the Cleveland Browns organization, nor do we condone them in any fashion. We have spoken with Tank and have made this very clear to him.

Yesterday we reported on Carder calling someone a "faggot" and saying he doesn't "agree with being gay or lesbian at all." Carder refused to apologize, saying people needed to "get a life." He later apologized, once the team got hold of him. The Browns have not yet tweeted their statement.

The Federation of Gay Games, and the Cleveland-based organizing committee for Gay Games 9, issued this statement:

Mr. Carder’s posts on Twitter, its subsequent removal and response, offers a great opportunity to elevate the LGBT conversation as it relates to sports. We understand that his comments are not reflective of the Cleveland Browns organization and look forward to working with the Browns and Cleveland’s other professional sports team as we plan for the Gay Games in Cleveland + Akron in 2014.

I assume the Browns and the NFL don't believe that's the end of it. A statement from the Browns is a good start, not the end of this.
