The U.S. women's basketball team continued its Olympics dominance, winning its sixth consecutive gold medal by crushing Spain, 101-72, in the final. The team has four openly gay, lesbian or bisexual players — Seimone Augustus, Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner and Angel McCoughtry.

The U.S. was led in the gold medal game by 17 points each from Linday Whalen and Diana Taurasi. For Taurasi, it was her fourth Olympic gold. Della Donne had 10 points, McCoughtry eight, Augustus six and Griner four. Griner led the team with seven rebounds.

We highlight the sexual orientation of these women because it puts a lie to the myth that being out will be a distraction and not allow athletes to perform at their best. It hasn't stopped these women. In a positive way, we're about the only site that focuses on their sexuality since publicizing LGBT athletes is our mission. These are great athletes, and whether gay, straight or bi, this team showed that it's the best in the world again.

There are 53 out athletes competing at the Olympics.
