Some gay New Yorkers are fed up with a gay-themed chant that has erupted in the stands at Rangers games for years. What has upset them is a chant of “Ho-mo Lar-ry!” that rains down on a particular fan who does a particular dance at particular Rangers games. Out lesbian Speaker of the City Council Christine Quinn, NYCGHA god Jeff Kagan, and some gay Rangers fans (some of whom have stopped going to games or canceled season tickets) are asking Madison Square Garden and the Rangers to do something about it.

Of course, some Rangers fans are trucking out the same “It’s a sacred tradition” and “sports are tough” bullshit that we hear every time someone defends some homophobic nonsense at sporting events. From the NYT:

“It’s a hockey game,” said Ricardo Pereira, 25, a season-ticket holder from Huntington on Long Island . “Hockey players are tough. Deal with it.”

To their credit, the Rangers are broadcasting warnings and have taken some action, but Quinn and others want more. We'll see how far the Rangers will take it. -Cyd Zeigler jr.
