helen-carroll.jpgLongtime friend of Outsports (and speaker at our first convention many years ago) Helen Carroll (right) today let us know about a segment of ESPN’s Outside the Lines this Sunday that will tackle the issue of negative recruiting in women’s sports and how it hurts lesbians. From Helen’s email:

In October 2006, NCLR co-hosted an LGBT Sports Think Tank with the NCAA designed to examine ways to address negative recruiting and sexual orientation. Following the success of our Think Tank, NCLR along with Pat Griffin, the Director of the “It Takes a Team!” Educational Campaign for LGBT Issues in Sport, began calling for a national dialogue concerning the impact of negative recruiting based on perceived sexual orientation. Recently, we’ve worked closely with the producer of Outside the Lines on the difficult task of convincing coaches and athletes to break the silence around this harmful practice. Click here for the NCAA’s Positive Recruiting Resources fact sheet for more information on negative recruiting. We hope you’ll tune in!

NCLR is a fantastic organization that is actually having a consistent effect on sports and gay rights. They have been involved in anti-lesbian incidents at Penn State and Florida, both involving female athletes. Definitely tune in for the segment, and do consider support NCLR however you can.

The segment airs this Sunday, March 23, at 9:30amET on ESPN and 12noonET on ESPN News. -Cyd Zeigler jr.
