Wimbledon has long prided itself on the purity of the dress of its participants, who must be clad in “almost entirely white.” Enter Maria Sharapova, one of the top contenders this year, who has announced she’ll wear shorts and a T-shirt this week.


“I’m going with the traditional shorts, believe it or not”, she said. “I’ve never worn shorts at a Grand Slam. Call it menswear, obviously. It’s kind of a tuxedo look, very simple lines, classic.”


Sharapova, one of the reigning sex objects on the tour, has never worn shorts in a Grand Slam event; and she’s only been to the Wimbledon finals once, beating Serena Williams in 2004. We’ll see if the shorts can reduce the cat calls from the guys in the stands; maybe that will help her get back. -Cyd Zeigler jr.
