While the number of Olympians who are openly gay to the media remains small, one female wrestler, at least, is gay-friendly. Randi Miller will be competing for the United States in women’s freestyle wrestling, 63kg. Back in 2004, she trained with the gay-oriented Golden Gate Wrestling Club in San Francisco while visiting the Bay Area; and she tangled with the guys. According to longtime gay-wrestling guru and GGWC god Gene Dermody, who had nothing but good things to say about Miller, she was friendly but shy; imagine that, a shy wrestler. If she’s open to participating in gay sporting events, good for her, and we hope she does well in Beijing.
Just an observation, but I have seen more and more straight people participating in gay tournaments for individual sports. I remember being at the Outgames and a large number of the powerlifters there were straight: And some of them coming from overseas to compete. Pretty cool that these gay events are attracting athletes of all walks of life. –Cyd Zeigler jr.
